    coronavirus disease (COVID-19) affecting us

Thought I’d start a thread about how the coronavirus (Covid-19) is affecting our lives.

As for myself, living in Ottawa, yes there are a few things.

As of March 15, 2020, numerous closures and cancellations. Here are some that pop to mind:
Civic – public libraries and community centers closed until early April
Provincial – public schools closed until April 6, Universities on hold
Federal – National Museums (we’re talking several top tier facilities) all closed to the public
Private – Apple Stores shut down, daughters competitive dance training/competition cancelled, all kid camps cancelled. Run on certain commodities such as meats, toilet paper, masks and vinyl gloves, as people stock pile.
Sports: NHL Ottawa Senators and OHL 67s games cancelled
Other: those who can, choosing to work from home

    From Wiki
“The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic is an ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China in December 2019 and recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020. Simultaneously, the WHO stated that this is the first known pandemic that could be controlled. As of 15 March, over 162,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in around 130 countries and territories; more than 6,000 people have died from the disease and around 75,000 have recovered. Regions affected by major outbreaks include mainland china, Europe, Iran, South Korea, and the United States. On 13 March 2020, the WHO stated that Europe was the current centre of the pandemic”

    How about this one?

I'm spending the school year in Princeton, NJ on sabbatical. Came home for a visit on Thursday evening, was to return this morning. While here, my health care plan announced they're no longer covering any international travel. So I'm stuck here, with all my stuff over there, for who knows long.

Kind of ironic, to be stranded at home!

Work wise I’m grounded. Usually in Vancouver every two weeks...not anymore. Trip to Toronto next month. Nope. I was shocked that I had to go to three stores to get a 12 pack of toilet paper. The TW went to a conference in Vancouver and apparently two of the presenters tested positive so everyone that was there was told to self quarantine. Parents in Yuma were supposed to come back next month but now it’s unknown if they’ll be able to cross. So if they stay their insurance runs out so if they get sick there...they’re screwed.
Scary times. Just remember to wash your damned hands and don’t lick anyone you don’t know.

My wife runs a private childcare dayhome. Our understanding is she can remain open, but we can’t even find anything concrete on that front, can only find info on approved Dayhomes. But within minutes of the announcement, two of her child’s parents pulled their kids from care out of fear.

And I work in a casino and with Ontario closing theirs today, I’m expecting to be laid off any day now.

You see all these comments online about staying home, flattening the curve and lockdowns but how is my family and many others in similar positions going to survive this financially?

Is it bad to say that the only thing I’m not stressed about right now is actually getting the virus?

Here in Ottawa, during the daytime many homeless people hang out in public venues. As these are shutting down, the homeless have no where to go.

Rightfully concerned. I'm no expert, but the governments said they will help if things are dire for you. Here is one resource:

Awesome...I actually teach this stuff! At a single watch, I'd say it's pretty much accurate. And the guy's a great teacher too.

Hey guys, you're all self-isolating anyway...take a chance to learn some math!

Re: coronavirus disease (COVID-19) affecting us

It's a real adventure here in the US. All kinds of redneck opinions how this is a government conspiracy, that it's overblown, things will be back to normal soon...all of which I wholeheartedly disagree with. Our county has no confirmed cases yet, but our municipal and state government have acted very quickly to ensure that we don't go all Italy down here. Public places all shut down. No orders to self-quarantine yet, but I'm stocked up and loaded just in case.

Meanwhile, I'm starting to realize how shallow my world is now that sports have been taken away. I've had little to no hankering to come here or go to HF for any reason at all.

All of the sudden, all those quotes about "sports isn't everything" suddenly seem to have much more significance. I haven't felt this detached from sports in a long time.

Outside of the self-inventory, the only other redeeming quality I can point out here is that gas has dropped to 1.99 a gallon (or .67 a litre for those of you back home).

But even with gas so cheap, it's not like there's anywhere worth driving to that's open...

Keep an open mind, and you never know who might walk in...

                        RIP Pizmo

March 16. Ontario bars and restaurants to close except those that do takeout or delivery.
Numerous other businesses shut down. Local bookstore and theatre come to mind.
Monday night. It’s quiet as Xmas eve outside.

Here in Ontario there is no wait time for EI benefits so if your business shuts down you start on EI immediately

Saskatchewan is shutting down schools starting Friday, rec facilities and most other community facilities (Libraries and such) are either already closed or are slowly closing.
