Official Elkherd 18th Annual (2023) CFL Pool Thread --- With Prizes!

    Hey all,

The long-awaited CFL season is about to begin, coincidentally on the same day as the event for which it exists --- the Elksherd CFL Pool. Prizes again will be offered, to the top two finishers!

In fact, this year the Elksherd CFL Pool is old enough to go to college!

    Rules

The pool works as follows: pick the winners of the games, and scores. That's it. For every game, you get:

    * 2 points for picking the winner.
    * a bonus point for getting the exact score for one of the two teams.
    * a total of 3 bonus points if you hit the final score precisely for both teams.

The pool will run until the end of the Grey Cup game.

    Prizes

It's a lot of fun, and mostly harmless. In past years, the top two finishers received an item from the now-defunct Esksfans shop. This year, the prizes will be of equal value, but there's a chance it'll have an elkish theme.

In the event of a points tie for 2nd place, the first tie breaker is "Wins". If still tied, we will have a random draw or flip a coin or have a 3rd party pick a number between 1 and 10 or whatever silly tie-breaking method I decide.

    Access

To get to the pool from the site's main page, click "CFL Pool" under the "elksherd.ca" banner. From there, you'll figure it out.

All the regular season games have now been entered, so predict as many as you want now. I'll be sending out weekly reminders a couple of days before each week's games.

WARNING: During the first week, we'll have to see if I got the time zone difference entered correctly. Make your picks in advance, to be safe.

FINALLY: If you predict a score 30-20, you will earn my undying respect and a tip of the cap from upstairs... Pizmo used to predict with this score in almost every game. He usually did better than I did on bonus points.

    Good luck!

    Cheers, Glen VB

BTW: Can some mod "sticky" this thread? Thanks!

          Hey folks,

You don't want to START the season by missing your picks... do you?!

Make your picks now! In fact, if you want, pick the games for the entire season! Then I won't pester you anymore. (Well... I still will. Especially tigerdar.)

Season starts in a couple of days! And, since I'm not 100% sure about the time zones this week, you don't want to wait until the last minute. (I'm actually in Paris, the site MIGHT be on Greenwich mean time, site is in Alberta, I'm usually in BC... who knows what time it is, anyway?)

I don't think there's been a more crucial Week 1 must win game than this one. It's already all of the talk, if they let it drag on for a couple weeks (or worse a couple months), the narrative will become overwhelming, throw in the guaranteed ticket, then it will also impact the budget for the team as well .

The players want it over with, badly. They are playing a decent team, but still a beatable team. They have to get this one.

If we are going to make the playoffs, the Riders are one of the teams we are going to have to beat out, at least in my opinion. A win at home will go a log ways to building confidence and getting the fans to come back. Sounds like tickets sales are over 35k, time to give them all a show.

Well, Week 1 is done... and check the standings, because it's more than 50/50 that you're tied for first place! More than half of us ended up at 3-1; none of us went 4-0. Almost everyone is within two points of the lead. And Tigerdar, just remember that there's a long way to go until the final game

Make your picks for next week! First game is coming tomorrow...er, today

Not that many years ago if I'd not picked EE to win, it would be remarked on... I check this recent week's picks and it seems almost everyone picked the Riders to win. I was the only one to 'drink the kool-aid" and pick our team. Interesting how feelings here have changed, just noting.

I used to pick the elks every week to regardless.. once I started the realism picks.. was much better

elks won’t win with corny nor the white numbers.. it’s a no brainer atm..

I actually feel badly for Corny. It's not really his fault; he's doing the best he can. He's been placed in a position where he just doesn't have a chance to succeed with his skill set.

Week 2 is done... and we have our first bonus point! It's enough to give adb a one-point lead over the other challengers at 7-1: couchspud, naf, and myself. Still very close, with absolutely everyone over .500. Well done!
