It's so hard to evaluate the WR when you didn't really have QBs or schemes to get them the ball. I liked Dunbar last year and Lewis would be a good piece if he is healthy. Hard to say if either would renegotiate to make the team better. The logic behind adding MBT is that you're going to get those guys more touches than they had last year, but the cost becomes prohibitive. I'd like to say MBT makes them better, but maybe Ford under centre from Day 1 with a decent co-ordinator and more assets around him would be fine.

I think you likely have to move on from Cornelius and eat some cost there. Even if he were to have a good camp, I think the fan base is done with that idea.

Of the others, I definitely pay Ceresna. They can probably let some of the others walk, though I still think Hutter is a decent player and teammate.

I was never really high on Foucault, and he's getting older. I'm sure a guy like Grahovac could step into that role now, even if they can't get the veteran piece we'd all like. Patrick Davis could also be a factor there, I'd guess.

Konar was great two years ago, but I've always thought he better suited as more of a rotational guy and ST player than a starting linebacker. They're starting to build a nice pool of young Canadians that can play in the LB corps with the likes of Schakel, Broderique, and the Appolon brothers if they can stay healthy. It's not a huge bonus to eat, but I worry Konar could cost more than his value relative to those pieces.

If I'm spending the money this winter, I still would like to get some more playmakers on defence. Maybe an end to play opposite Leonard if he returns and some veteran experience in the linebacking corps. The young guys in the secondary will take some steps, but there are positions they can upgrade there. Offensively, the line would appear to be the priority.

Good morning team , which of these guys would you keep in 2024 and give the roster bonus to on Jan 15th
I would move on from Lewis or Dunbar (if they won't renegotiate) and Corny. I would keep Ceresna, Hutter and possibly Konar (if his salary is decent)

Tough decision on Lewis. Injuries definitely hurt his production, but more importantly, our OC for the first half of the year hurt everyone's production.
Hutter to me is solid. He's earned his bonus.
Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are

In a perfect world I want WR Lewis and Dunbar back… I thought Dumbar was very good with QB Ford before his season ending injury…WR Lewis down the stretch was solid also…agreed our O looked much better with new OC and Ford…. Both those REC are very good and maybe can afford them with Ford on last year of rookie contract and money saved if we release QB Cornelius…

S Hutter is a maybe…. Was regulated to back up and special teamed this last season…depends what the money is I guess..I don’t see him being out starting S this year…. He a step up on S Hoover… and once he released never found work again…

          My 4 Cents…

This also depend on the QB dilemma…. Will MBT want yo sign if we don’t bring back Lewis/Dunbar? Will we have enough money to keep those REC if MBT comes with a big price tag?

Also think CJ needs to spend a bit on defence…. A DE and one addition to secondary high on my list…

          That’s 5 Cents…

If they’re not sure on Ford and they’ve apparently kicked the tires on MBT, does anyone think the Elks could make a play on Dru Brown? There are only so many chairs available for starters in the league and he has shown promise.

Roster bonuses are merely a portion of the player's salary paid in advance. Roster bonus early in the year + base salary = actual salary. If the club is confident the player will make the roster and are comfortable paying the sum of the bonus + base then it's an easy decision to pay that roster bonus.

If we sign MBT , we can’t keep both Lewis and Dunbar , if we want to spend money on the D , personally I keep Dunbar and let Lewis and his 325k salary go

Yes, but a player gets that money (bonus) even if he gets cut at training camp. So technically, it can't be salary, if he doesn't play a game.
It's part of his overall compensation, not part of his overall salary.

I've always preferred to think of it as a non-refundable advance on the player's salary as opposed to a bonus.

They only cut a player prior to bonus payout, if they are sure they can replace him for cheaper or if the player didn't perform up to their expectations the prior year.

How are the Lions shaping up so far this off season? Saw that Evans retired, did you guys have a QB in the wings that we don't know about?

Been a slow start to their offseason but today they extended KR Terry Williams and DE Sione Teuhema thru 2025. Only QBs they have in the wings are Dom Davis who I doubt will be back and Chase Brice who joined them part way into last season. Given they are hosting the Grey Cup I'm expecting them to add a veteran back up. They are bringing back "Stove" Richardson. If he's over that achilles injury that had a setback late in 2022 just as he was about to return he could be a terrific addition. Still have some very important pending FAs to deal with including Betts, Hladik, Cottoy, Hollins and Hatcher. I think they will move on from Whitehead. Hatcher might go on the backburner as his achilles injury likely keeps him out until Labour Day.
