Having Jones as GM, HC and DC is one of the biggest mistakes the Elks have made in a while IMO. You have set yourself up to fail before you have done anything. During the offseason, you can maybe do it as you lean on your support staff but not during the season.
Even if as a GM you have your support staff doing the bulk of your duties, as the GM, you are still the boss so you would still have to review what they did to some degree and give your sign off and you'd still be involved. There is organizational management, roster management, cap management, injury management, signings, trades, scouting for injury replacement, scouting for future signings and the draft. All that will take some of your time week to week.
HC. You have your coordinators do most of the work but again, as the HC, you are the boss so you have to know what's the plan. You would be involved in the planning for each week. Roster decisions have to be made for the game, All that takes time. During the game itself. The coordinators make the play calls but the HC would know what's going on and have involvement. All that takes time.
DC. You are in charge of the game planning for that week. You'd be reviewing film of the other teams offense to figure out a game plan for your defense to counter act. You'd be deciding on some roster decisions for the defense. Maybe 1 player is better at something than another and is a better fit to start vs team x than another guy. Game time. You are making the D calls to counter act the offense. Between plays, you have less than 20 seconds to make the call so you have to decide what to call and have your team lined up ready in seconds. You would have some involvement in switching out guys between plays. All that takes time.
So one guy was doing all of that. There simply isn't enough hours each day in the week leading up to the game for one guy to be involved in GM, HC and DC duties and do them to the best of their abilities. When the DC coordinator should be breaking down film for game planning, you are off doing GM stuff or HC stuff because it needs to be done. When the game is going on, and the defense isn't on field, rather than the DC focusing on making adjustment, he's off being the head coach doing all the HC stuff that has to happen during the game. During the game, the DC would be focused solely on the defense and not worried about the other units. When you are the HC, you have to have all 3 units on your mind.
I know there was some factors why it was done that way but it was a very poor decision on the part of the Elks because no matter how good a guy might be or how hard he works, there is a reason why those jobs are split up because it way to much for 1 guy. So I am glad they at least brought in a guy to take over the DC.Blindly accept whatever they do and if it doesn't work out, I guess there's always next year.
