Thought this might warrant a new thread. Biggest topic of conversation surrounding the team this year seems to be at the QB position. Reilly is undoubtedly the #1 but what happens after that is going to be very interesting. IMO the battle for the #3 is between Goltz and Lynch, leaving Franklin as the guy on the outside as I think they like Nichols as the #2. I would hope that if this plays out like that and one of Lynch or Goltz is released that they throw Franklin on the PR to learn for the year, what is your opinion?

Re: QB's
I would really like to see Goltz stick around as #3.
He's the guy that has the league experience needed that if, hopefully never, if Reilly gods down and Matty struggles, Goltz could come in and be the most serviceable.
That said, as nice as the Pat White packages were used last year, I don't think Lynch makes that much of a difference that it'd hurt me to see him released.

Re: QB's
I'm interested to see how the qbs are rotated Friday... Will the coaches wanna see more situational stuff from lynch? Because goltz is running reg offence ( well he was on sat ) and not situational
How much time Nichols gets and if Franklin gets any will be a good indication...
I don't wanna see it personally but u could see Nichols being offered up at any point this season
Interesting times

Re: QB's
Great idea for a thread Looner.
For me too early to call - too many questions, and I don't know if you can resolve them in the next preseason game. Can Goltz run the #3 package as well as Lynch? Is Goltz possibly a better #2 option to Nichols? How good would Franklin fair against a 1st string defense?
Right now, I think Lynch is the odd man out, but if Lynch truly outshines Goltz in that no-huddle, short-yardage package, it's a Nichols/Goltz decision. If I'm coach, somebody stubs a toe and is IR'd so I have a little more time to evaluate. I must admit though, Goltz never really impressed me in Winnipeg, so I'd be damn sure before I keep him and let go of Matt.Hope, at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are

Agree.. Ir one of em... Guess the guy to go would be the loser of the goltz lynch battle.. With prob Franklin moving to prOriginally posted by Hugoagogo View PostGreat idea for a thread Looner.

Re: QB's
Part of me wonders if Franklin could be our version of Bo Levi Mitchell - a young third stringer who comes in, gets a year or two to hone his skills, and eventually emerges as a starter.
Not that I don't want Reilly to do well, but if he keeps getting injured time and again, someone needs to be ready to step in. I'd much rather have Franklin than Nichols or Goltz in that number two spot.Keep an open mind, and you never know who might walk in...

Re: QB's
In terms of style Nichols is the odd man out. In his game action last year, he rarely took off and ran. That is part of Reilly's game, along with Franklin, Goltz, and Lynch.
My guess is Lynch and Nichols are gone, and we go with Reilly, Goltz (experience) and Franklin as our 3.The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

Still too small of a sample size, but right now I have:Originally posted by Looner View PostThought this might warrant a new thread. #1 Reilly (obviously)
#2 Nichols (for the first time since joining the Esks he is pressured at #2 ... he could be trade bait to Toronto or Ottawa, but Ed needs to be sure that Franklin or Goltz can be the #2 guy first.)
#3 Franklin (could run the short yardage offense and would ensure #2 is looking over his shoulder the whole season .... as far a potential goes he has a better upside than Nichols, but he hasn't won #2 on a few weeks in camp and one preseason game.)
#4 Goltz (hanging in there, but needs one of the other three to get nicked ... on the bubble ... if they want to trade Nichols they might move Goltz up to #3 and stash Franklin on the PR for a short period. For political reasons, i.e. keeping him happy, Goltz could win #3 out of camp, but only if the Esks plan to move Nichols)
#5 Lynch (hasn't done enough, but they like his legs ... most likely a cut very soon)

Yup ... thinking the same ... Reilly needs to stay healthy this season or become being branded a Tate and risk a younger talent (Franklin potentially) stepping in.Originally posted by OK14 View PostPart of me wonders if Franklin could be our version of Bo Levi Mitchell - a young third stringer who comes in, gets a year or two to hone his skills, and eventually emerges as a starter.

Re: QB's
That would be lingering effects of coming back from ACL surgery. That can take a long time to heal from, both physically and mentally. That said, the pressure is on now, and he needs to show he can step up or he's going to be stepped over.Originally posted by pete View PostIn terms of style Nichols is the odd man out. Re: QB's
Seen that on this site a couple of times. Lame excuse. Adrian Peterson returned from ACL in less than a year (Torn Dec 2011 playing again Sept 2012) and almost broke the NFL rushing record. He happened to win NFL MVP for his efforts.Originally posted by nafnikufesin View PostThat would be lingering effects of coming back from ACL surgery. As for QB's Tom Brady tore his ACL in 2008 returned 2009 and had an above average year. Carson Palmer blew his entire knee up in 2006 and returned less than a year later and played very well.
If Nichols was cleared to play, and can't mentally overcome the injury do we want him as our backup? Honestly, the way he played last year I don't.The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.
