Re: Esks Team Award Winners Announced

The argument on Reilly for MOP is in many ways pointless. Most of us can think that Reilly is worthy of consideration, but lets be honest here... Burris is the only choice this season and this is coming from someone who despises him.

How on Earth could a QB come in and win 8 straight on a team that lost 10 straight not be considered outstanding?
Well he found a way to finish the season 8-0 without being anywhere close to the best QB in the league over that stretch.

I was under the impression that the case for Reilly's team MOP nod was the fact that the team finished 14-4 and Reilly played a significant role in getting the team to that record.

In my opinion, both Bowman and Walker had more outstanding seasons than Reilly did. Same kind of thing happening here with Rogers getting passed over in favor of Mitchell.

You should be able to spot them in the nosebleeds at IGF if the camera points them out.
You bet! They'll parade through the stands with the cup after winning the game.

Apparently Nik Lewis thinks Bowman getting an All Star nod is a farce.

I would agree with this. While I have the utmost respect for Reilly - I would take him as my team's starter over pretty much anyone in the league now and going forward - and I admire his character, toughness, grit, and ability to inspire his teammates, that makes him a captain and the heart of the team. He had many good games, a handful of poor ones, and only 3-4 great ones. Is he the Esks MVP? Absolutely, there isn't any one single player that is more the straw that stirs the drink. I don't think he should have been the MOP nominee though, as while it is a nice show of respect to their leader, I don't believe his season was truly outstanding for it's individual football play.

The challenge is, under the team first approach that has been brought in and bought into, there were very few individuals that stood out amongst their teammates that were also standing tall. Almondo just shows up and does his job taking double teams and still plugging the middle. Grymes and Ojo had big plays, but most of their value was in forcing QBs to go away from them. Willie Bowman and Deon Lacey had exceptional games, but they were in a crew where it was next man up and rotation. Adarius ended up with some big numbers, but most of the season we were talking about what he could've been doing rather than what he was accomplishing. Walker burst onto the scene like no one else has in this league, then cooled off for a few games before recapturing his form and the attention of his QB - in my mind, easily the most outstanding player in terms of football play, but only half a season despite it being one helluva half season.

I'm not running these guys down... they won 14 friggin ball games, but they did so as a team rather than a studs and scrubs roster where you hope your big contributors are enough to mask your weaknesses. When it comes to MOP though, I think it is very important to differentiate between a guy that is most valuable to his team and a guy that is most outstanding.

Nik's got nothing better to do these days than sit on his couch and tweet. Keep it coming Nik; the Esks' dressing room walls could use some more decoration.

Looks to me that Nik's been looking only at the stat line himself.

Wonder why Reilly keeps throwing to Bowman, even though he does drop some. Hmm...
Out of my mind; back in five minutes.

He's got a point, but it's one that shouldn't be applied selectively.

As alluded to by others, we have people recognized because of their tackle totals, not how they played to get them. We have guys that racked up huge sack totals, but likely blew some run assignments or were consistently freed up by scheme to freelance - doesn't make them better DEs, but the voters notice.

To me, generally speaking, the CFLPA allstar selections have a lot more credibility than the those that come from the Football Reporters of Canada. There are certainly FRC members that know their crap, but there are plenty of others that Lewis is absolutely correct on. Personally, I'd like to see the voting done by coaches (HC and assistants) as well as GMs, where in all cases you cannot vote for your own players. You'd see who football people respect, admire and plan around.

It's like that for DBs too... a DB can consistently cover well and never have the ball thrown his way - and never get noticed. Meanwhile a DB who gets beat on a regular basis will rack up tackles and get an INT every now and then, and is more likely to get recognition based on his stat line.

^ Case in point, J.C. Sheritt winning DPOTY in 2012 when the Esks still finished with a lacklustre record.
Keep an open mind, and you never know who might walk in...

You're right about the "black hole".... as for being stupid enough... Popp is coaching the Als again next year.

Lewis should get a job doing TV spots for Popeye's or Sonic when he is done flapping his gums in football. It would be a win win.... they could pay him with food and he would eat these guys into bankruptcy! Either way he disappears from the CFL entirely ..... geez, I'm smiling already.......

Nope ... I asked how you would rate Reilly's season if the Esks went 0-10 before Reilly coming back and having the same 8-game stretch that he actually had.
