Re: Oilers name Pat Quinn Head Coach, Renney Associate
Robbie Schremp is lazy, and has nobody to blame but himself for where he's ended up.
He was the LAST cut as a 19 year old... and that was the closet he ever got. It says far more about him than anyone else.
Apparently the Leafs are interested and offered a decent pick (Matheson).
Wonder how much we'd have to add to the 10th and Schremp to get into the top 7...

Re: Oilers name Pat Quinn Head Coach, Renney Associate
I think the Oilers have done well here. In fact, the more I think about this, the more I like these coaching moves. I'm thinking that the Quinn/Renney tandem is just what we need. Quinn is a sound hockey guy and can direct the team and Renney can handle much of the technical aspect. It'll be expensive coaches, but there is no cap on coaches' salaries. I hope they'll be able to turn guys like Penner and Horc into the players they can be. I look for Horc to rebound from last season. I also think they'll work well with the younger guys.
I think this is the right move for the team at this time. I'm not saying that this will turn us into a playoff contender, but it's part of what we need. Quinn can be arrogant but he's a good hockey man with a winning record. With Toronto he had built a solid team for several years before the lockout. Twice they went to the conference finals.
He's also had a good record in the Olympics, U18s and world juniors. I'm not saying this guarantees success here, but he has demonstrated an ability to win. He's good with the young players, and we do have lots of those.
By the way, I don't think McT is a bad coach. It's just that the players stopped playing for him. He was a bit of a victim here. I expect he'll have success somewhere else. I'd say that's as much on them as on him. We'll see how the players react to this move. I think this will be good and it will work out well. Congrats to Tambo for making his first big move a good one, and to Lowe for stepping aside. Maybe now we can get our major sports teams back on track with the recent moves. It is in the wins and losses and I'm looking forward to the new football and hockey seasons like none for several years.
C'mon, Oiler players. Belly up. Time to show what you're made of. It's on you now.

Re: Oilers name Pat Quinn Head Coach, Renney Associate
It's true that Schremp didn't get any fair sort of run of games up in Edmonton. And when he was here he didn't play any worse than some of the guys who were on the roster.
But Schremp didn't respond to that by kicking ass. He responded to it by sulking and playing like crap in the AHL. He's done, IMO.

Agreed. There's no need for two Jason Bonsignore mentions in the same thread, but I'm just sayin'...Originally posted by Angelus View PostThe problems with Schremp have absolutely nothing to do with who is coaching the Edmonton Oilers. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Oilers cut ties with him before training camp.
If all the coaches he's seen at the AHL level couldn't get a complete game out of him, I can't see it being fair to hang this guy on MacTavish... though it's pretty much done for sport by most of those that see his once a year highlight from a skills competition.

Pretty much the same in the Alpine countries. I remember in Austria, skiing stories would make the headlines of the sports section (or even the front of the paper) even in the blazing heat of July - like hockey does at home. But if I went 1 hour from Vienna into either the Czech Republic or Slovakia...it was hockey.Originally posted by Party Time View PostYup, I couldn't even find a pub that was showing the World Hockey Championships...if it's not skiing or soccer they aren't interested.....
But soccer coverage was a constant - no matter what the country in Europe.

When Lillehammer hosted the 94 Olympics, the Opening Ceremonies where held at the bottom of a ski jump. They even had a ski jumper fly off the jump while holding the Olympic Torch - the torch part starts at about 3:54 (from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation)

How so? Salary - $7 mil, cap hit - $5.6 mil.Originally posted by PDO View PostYup.
He'd be worth a lot more too.
He's the best player on the roster, and his contract offers fantastic value.

Agreed.Originally posted by HFPM View PostBest defenceman in the Northwest.
Brent Burns isn't quite there and Willie Mitchell doesn't have the 2 way ability Lubo does.
Burns also has concussion issues. I'd have him at #2, assuming he recovers, and Regehr at #3....
