Re: 2021 Edmonton Oilers season thread

Fans: The west is too strong; the East has it easy. It's not fair to Western teams!
Also fans: Well, a crossover game and win doesn't really count.
There has been plenty of roar over making it a one-division league. If that's the case, the result is the same. We have a lower seeding and won against a higher team to go on to the next round.

Yes, in every season you have 1 winner and 8 losers, but if we hadn't gone to the playoffs, we would have had everyone sour about how we didn't make the playoffs vs how we were one win from being in the Grey Cup game. It's not a successful season, but we were better than more than half the teams who were out before us.

      What is worse?

      1. Not winning a single playoff game.

      2. Blowing a 3-1 series lead.

All that talk from Leaf fan journalists about how Connor McDavid deserves to be on another team (namely the Leafs), who can be successful in the playoffs

Wonder where Auston Matthews will be next season?

The Oilers struggled. It was bad. But TO collapsed. That would feel worse IMO.

Regardless, both clubs can't be happy with the first round.

Nuge re-signed, $41 million over 8 years. Good news, reasonable dollars. My only concern that it was that this wasn't done as a handshake deal and then announced after the expansion draft. With rumblings that the Oilers are going to protect players like Kassian and Archibald, now it makes losing someone like Benson or Jones more likely.

How can the Oilers continue to trot out one dumb Gm after another. I mean the law of averages might say you get at least one that is not a total dumbass.

It's a good thing this board doesn't allow profanity. Seriously, screw this team.

Re: 2021 Edmonton Oilers season thread

Here's the thing: even if Keith manages to reverse the inevitable decline with age that he's been experiencing for the past 5 years (Narrator: he won't) and is worth the cap hit of $5.8 million per year (Narrator: he isn't), Holland lost every aspect of this deal. Chicago had no leverage. None.

Keith had a no trade contract that he was only going to waive for two teams. They don't want to keep salary? Then hang up the phone. They don't want to take a bad contract back? Then hang up the phone. They want picks and prospects but aren't willing to give anything of value in return? Then hang up the phone. Was Seattle willing to give up this much to make the trade? Let them.

Holland took an overpaid player in decline that he now has to protect in the expansion draft and a failed prospect in exchange for a prospect who was still improving, a pick (which we have fewer and fewer of), and most importantly, cap space.

That trade was something else. I still can't get over locking up both the 2nd and 3rd draft picks for next season considering the quality those picks have been able to pick up at the deadline. Just pure stupidity...

I guess they can get a little creative if necessary and offer the second rounder with the condition being that if they get to the cup, it becomes a first, or that it becomes a second in 2023 + something, but I agree, they've now devalued a very valuable trade deadline asset by tying up that 2nd rounder (albeit at very low odds and in a scenario that if it gets activated, we're likely happy with the trade after all, I mean if Keith is in the top 4 and we're in the cup final, he likely helped the team get there).

Hey. I don't think it will happen, just that if Keith was a key contributor (i.e. 2nd pairing LD) on a team that is going into the Stanley Cup final next year, I'd be more forgiving about the trade, even though I'd still maintain that at the time of the trade it was an major overpay.
