Carolina has good knowledgeable, loud fans.

I wouldnt really call that proof, it was just some fan with a reader. Rexalls reading may have come from a fan too though.

I'd like to see the league get an offical DB reader in there and settle this issue for fact.

Proof? Sorry, you weren't at the game down in Raleigh were you? My friend was at both games with tons of buddies, including ex-Whaler fans, they came up here for game 3 and all agree that Rexall is much Louder than Carolina has been. That reading was taken from a fans reader, and has already basically been proven as inaccurate.

Obviously you believe anything you hear... whatever, Edmonton has the loudest fans in the NHL and you seem to hate that fact.

The whole issue of db readings is based on the quality of the meter and their placement. As someone who has actually worked with expensive SPL ( sound pressure level) equipment in various car audio soundoffs and db drag racing, most handheld db meters are about as acurate as a carpenter trying to build a house by eyeballing every measurement. A true and accurate db measurement would have a high quality spl hemispherical mic placed at or near the center of the building with perhaps several other such mics placed at a variety of other locations a set distance away from someone yelling at it nearby. That's the problem with handhelds. A person holding it is going to get a skewed reading if some fan is screaming a foot away from it, as opposed to what a spl meter would pick up let's say below the score clock.

Building acoustics also play a huge role in determining the final spl numbers.

Finally a reasonable response to this. Thanks.

I figured that reading of 130 or whatever it was would be due to somebody blowing an air horn into it.
I put no trust into any of those readings and frankly, I don't care to know the actual readings.
My head and my heart tell me the same thing. Rexall is the best damn arena in terms of noise and atmosphere and knowledgable fans. And that's all I need to know.
These pretzels are making me thirsty.

No matter what the actual spl numbers are, it's an absolute certainty that the torch has been passed from the old Chicago Stadium to Rexal as the craziest hockey insane asylum on the planet.

                Thanks Dies.

I can attest somewhat to that as well - having worked airside for about 6 months some time ago. A jet engine is loud...but if it's taking off on runway 2/20 while you're at the gate, it's going to sound a lot quieter.

As for the Old Chicago Stadium, it helped that the Barton organ speakers were built into the structure of the stadium.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Nope, the Bel system is a logarithmic scale, proportionally related to the intensity of sound through powers of 10.

They obviously doctored that reading. I am guessing they have a machine that is purposely out of calibration. All the official DB readers the NHL uses are stationed at center ice and come with a calibration report.

133.2 DB’s is above the hearing threshold of pain. And it is way louder than 115.3. Increases on the decibel range are not linear, and thus Carolina would need to increase their fan base from 20,000 odd thousand to 100,000s of thousands of people to obtain those readings. I don’t think they can fit that many people into the stadium. It doesn’t surprise me that a US based team would go to lengths to doctor something as trivial as crowd noise.

Also telling is both Edmonton and Carolina players are talking about how loud Rextall Place is.

We have the loudest building, END OF STORY.

                    Carolina is full of it.

At 130 decibels your eardrums start to bleed. The decibel levels are on a non-linear scale... going from 114 to 115 is a 10x increase in loudness... so for Carolina to be at 133 they would have to be over 100 times louder than Rexall which is complete BS. People I know that were at the RBC during the first two games, and here for game 3 say it's no contest.
I should have read your reply before I typed mine. It is absolute BS and for those in the know of the DB range it is obvious they are cheating the system.

They should have at least cheated with feasible numbers.

According to the link an increase of 10dB would be 10x more powerful. Keep in mind, they're talking about peak noise and not sustained which makes it plausible. There's no question we have the loudest fans for 60 min
                        These are peak readings.

No, the NHL has been making official readings.

Part of the NHLs requirement is the reading must be taken from center ice.

When it boils down to cheating nothing is trivial. Speaking of cheating that reminds me of my next thread.....................
