October Video Game Sales Show Interesting Numbers

    From NPD:

The last month that the 360 is the sole next-gen console.....

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161710...stnews;title;2

    Interesting to note:

-Not 1 PSP title in the top 20.
-4 DS titles in the top 20
-7 of the top 10 are PS2 games,
-1 GBA game in the top 10, 1 360 game in top 10
    -4 360 games in the top 20
-The sims continues to dominate on the PC

Nintendo is clearly owning the handheld market, and the PS2 is still tops in the console market. The 360 has very good market penetration with approx 7 Million units sold globally, but 10 million was their goal for year 1. The DS seems to be right in there with the TV consoles. Lots of top selling good software. The PSP is a flop.

Sony should learn from the PSP when it comes to the PS3. Price was the reason that the PSP didn't take off. Even now to get a PSP and a memory stick duo is $300 all in. For a handheld, that's ridiculous. Especially when the DS is selling for less than half of that. Since nobody bought PSPs, developers didn't make good games for it. All the PSP really got was ports and Grand theft Auto.

Sony will need to aggressively tackle its price point with the PS3. They only met half of their shipping targets.

Currently, the global "next-gen" console sales look like this:

      360: 7.8 Million
      Wii: 800,000
      PS3: 250,000

Nintendo has stated that they shipped a million to North America, and it has sold out. So those numbers are likely stale. They also claim that they will have 4 million shipped by December 31, 2006. I suspect that there will be at least 2-3 million 360s sold globally this holiday season, while the PS3 has zero stock, and very few on the way.

So, on December 31, things should look like this globally:

      360: ~10.5 Million
      Wii: ~4 Million
      PS3: ~600,000

Console history indicates that the 18 month mark is usually when you get the first price drop. So, imagine these Canadian console prices for Christmas, 2007:

      360 Premium: $399.99
      Wii: $259.99
      PS3 60GB: $659.99

Sony simply can't allow that to happen. But how do they avoid it? If it does go down like that, then expect Dec 31, 2007 to look like this:

      360: 18 Million
      Wii: 10 Million
      PS3: 5 Million

To avoid this, as I said, Sony will have to have a price cut on the PS3 BEFORE Christmas next year.

Over the course of the this generation, about 5.5 years, there is no doubt that Microsoft has positioned itself very well, as has Nintendo. Nintendo is in a position, however, where their console will not have the same life cycle as the other 2. The games will be fun, but in 2-3 years the games will be looking rather dated I expect, even if developers are taking full advantage of the Wii's power (about 1.5x that of an original Xbox or GameCube). So no doubt Nintnedo will need to hit the market with Wii2 by 2009, while MS likely won't go to market until 2010, and Sony...well they say they want 10 years out of the PS3.

That is why I decided against buying the damn thing for my nephew. My brother talked me out of it, and basically said the same negative feedback on it.

Bought him Guitar Hero 1&2 instead!!
        Long live the B.O.N.E.

The game can be bought with the controller (the usual deal) or without.

Any new 1st person shooters on the horizon for the PC?

I just finished the FEAR expansion pack and before that did Call of Duty and the Half Life expansion pack. Anything good out there?

Well, I'm hooked on Battlefield 2142 right now. Rainbow 6 Vegas is coming for the PC in a few weeks. Bioshock comes in the spring, and Gears of War comes to the PC once Vista is released.

That's what I hear. I got my new issue of PC Gamer in the mail yesterday. Everything about Windows Vista and Live Anywhere. PC Gaming is about to become better than ever. They had a picture of one of MS's new "Games For Windows" kiosks, with game product stand....one of the games....Gears of War.
