I was at the CES show in Vegas and while home A/V wasn't my main purpose of going, the general feel tends to be that manufacturers will probably make components that will support both formats.

So you'll get Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo players or what?
In that case, customer purchases of software (movies) on one brand or the other would determine who drops out of the market.
Unless every studio goes the way Warner just did with Blu-Ray on one side and HD-DVD on the other.

Pretty much. Hitatchi, Panasonic and I can't remember the other one right now have invested in Blu ray so it's not like the old Beta vs VHS deal where one company was bucking the trend.

That's why I don't think the PS3 is out of the console race, in spite of the fact it trails the 360 and Wii hevaily at this point.

I feel Blu Ray will go the way of Beta. Sony is stupid with thier, buy this new technology stuff. They have the tech but will probably not let other companies develope the same type of products, hence the HD DVD.

As Diesel already said, it's not like Beta. It's not Sony vs. everyone else. It's Sony AND everyone else.
