Don't you just love the housing prices??

    Cripes.

The boyf and I have been wanting to take some time after his football season to do some travelling and have also been looking into moving to another country for a little while.
Our first choice is the US, preferrably Nevada, Arizona, or Texas. Its something different and has hotter temperatures, but since my sister is getting married next summer, its close enough to fly back often for dress fittings, events, etc. But we are having difficulties in the Visa department and have no idea how to get going on it. Because of that, we might just move to Australia.

Anyways, we've been looking at real estate in the US for the past few months. The difference in housing is ridiculous.
We were looking at homes in and around the Dallas area, specifically Arlington. I stayed in Arlington when I was in Texas, and for some reason just fell in love with it.

In Edmonton, you can get THIS HOUSE

for more than what you would pay for THIS HOUSE in Arlington.
And yes, that is after doing the currency conversion.

I love that house from Arlington. I realise people might have different taste in housing than I do, and I would definitely do some re-painting in the house, but I love it.

It just really sucks looking at houses in Arlington, Dallas, etc, and then logging onto the Edmonton real estate sites and seeing what you can get for the same price.

You'll get fat if you move to Texas.

I bought my house in Sherwood Park in the summer of 2004. Judging by the listings on mls.ca similar houses are now going for almost double what I paid.

If I hadn't gotten in then, I'd never be able to get in now.

I know what you mean! My boyf bought his house for 175 and thought he had severely overpaid, because of the shape the basement was in. But now, a couple years later, its worth just about double. We even took a cab somewhere, and the cab driver commented on the house. Justin made a comment about possibly selling in the fall, and the cab driver right away gave Justin his card and said, "I'll give you 310. You call that number and I'll bring my family over to see it."
I completely lucked out finding a partner that already has a house. lol... because as a young couple, we would be completely screwed trying to get into the housing market now.

I was talking to a friend from Dallas a couple months ago, and I was talking about housing prices. She questioned how much the average Canadian income is, because she was absolutely stunned at houses at $350,000 being a deal.

The boyf would prefer to move to Nevada or Arizona over Texas, but because of housing prices and the cost of living in general in Texas, I might just get my way.

As a current homeowner I loooove current house prices. Nothing like having one's property almost tripple in value in less than 10 years.

Ditto. Bought my downtown condo in March 2004, just before they started construction, and moved in last February. We could probably sell it for twice the price if we wanted to move again (which I don't).

I bought my house in about 1997, might have the mortgage done by the end of this year. Paid $93,500 for it, it's probably worth $340,000 now. Of course all this does for me right now is give me higher taxes to pay.

I feel sorry for young people. I don't have any idea how they could make it.

And the houses aren't even worth it. If you found a bargan, you could buy a $220,000 house that is close to being condemned.

And a crap load of equity that you can use for investment purposes and get tax writeoffs!

But you only win if you sell and move to Regina. Not much of a win.

I think that's why people are moving either to or back to Sask. For 200k you can find some mansions here.

Seriously there is a 140k house just down the street from me that is 3 stories, 4 bedroom, 2 bath, double car garage. Taxes are $1050 a year.

Thats the thing. You could sell your house for quite the profit, but then what the heck do you buy???

If we do end up moving to Texas, we wouldn't buy anything that was near the maximum of what we could afford, and we'd still end up with a great home. Plus, we'd be able to pocket some of the money made off of the house and keep it in savings.

But at the same time, what kind of a housing market do we come back to??
