Went to Jethro Tull concert on Tuesday (25th)

As with the last couple of times I've seen them Ian Andersons voice is basically shot. I think that is the 1st thing that seems to go with older artists. However the band and the musicianship (is that a word?) were simply outstanding. Martin Barre is one of the most underated guitar players in the rock genre. The man is brilliant.

    Overall and excellent show.

Very cool... but, yes it's true about so many singers how their voices just don't have the same oomph or range any more.

The deluxe version of Thick as a Brick is a great listen. The interview with Anderson, Barre (and ??) is fabulous. Especially where they talk about creating a 'stage show' when nobody else was really doing it. There's one bit involving Martin, his penchant for beer during performances, his filling of empties with pee, a rabbit suit and spillage. I'll leave the rest to your imagination!
    Turf Toe:
    - "...turf toe is a common malady that is more of a nuisance than a serious injury."
    - "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
    - "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

Well during the show everyone had their bottled water available for them to drink....except Barre who had one of those red plastic cups that he went off stage to fill up a few times during the show.

I went to the show here in Calgary:

        Good points-

        Outstanding musicians
        Very personable, funny, charming
        Great showmanship and flute playing
Great keyboards, all the musicians are top notch
long set-over 2 hours and a great encore for "Locomotive Breath"

        Bad Points-

Anderson has absolutely no singing voice. Stretched his neck like a turkey when staring into the microphone. Painful to observe.

Butchered a few Tull classics with jazz or classical arrangements that were simply too much. There were too many wandering epics of lost English loves in the Woods. Macbeth is o.k. in certain quantities but not to this extent.

Long flute solos that got a bit slobbery. Barre's solo stuff is sub-par. It does not approach Tull's material. Strictly filler while Anderson rests his voice.

On the whole, worth the money. I wonder if Anderson was ever a great singer? I never saw him in concert before.

Lastly, as per posts above, are all singers over 60 "weak-voiced?"

Cases in point-- John Fogerty (aged 62) at the Saddledome two months ago. He has a very powerful voice and he sounds like he is in his 30's. He is a very exciting vocalist and as strong as ever.

Petula Clark (age 75) at Frank Sisson's Saloon here in Calgary two weeks ago. Still sings like a bird and hit high notes that most vocalists would never dream of. Great show and a first class lady (got her autograph back stage, wow what a dream girl she must have been at age 21).

        Good weekend everybody.

I saw them at the Coliseum in 1976. I remember that it was a great show and I don't think that Ian Anderson's voice was noticeably worse than it was on their albums of that era.

Your words not mine. I said the voice is the 1st thing that goes. He could have been stronger voice wise and still wouldn't have sounded that good.

Having said that he has had a very acceptable voice in the studio for a lot of albumns. I also think the bad voice is a reason for extra musical pieces and solos.

I was there, third row just left of centre. Great review and agreed on all accounts. Wish they wouldn't have f*cked with Aqualung though. You don't mess with classics!
