Plasma or LCD

Looking for a new TV. 42" or 46". Just stuck on the pros and cons of Plasma versus LCD?

For some reason Plasma doesn't cost as much. I have been told by some that Plasma has some risk of burn-in with video games. So I'm wary of that.

Somebody who knows this stuff, please give us the straight goods.

walk into the two TV rooms at Leon's and you'll get a hint at one aspect......

there is a reason they keep a fan going full time in their room full o' plasmas......they throw a ton of heat.

That said.......LCD is more expensive, and both have the same problem if you ever lose a pixel......

myself, I went with a new Samsung DLP.......their new light engine means no moving parts (less chance of failure - where traditional DLP's have a spinning mirror ball with thousands of tiny mirrors that reflect light) and you never have to change a bulb (one of the drawbacks to traditional DLP compared to plasma or LCD).

While you'll get a small bit of screen darkening when you are at an extreme angle, the quality is the same no matter what platform of 1080p you decide on. It just depends on what's important to you...

for me, that was getting a 61" for less than the cost of a 42" LCD or Plasma.....

I bought a LCD for this reason. The boy loves playing video games (well his pop does too) so the answer was easy.

one more thing.....research specific brands and features to help find what you're looking for. There is plenty of info on the net, and chances are when you go in, unless you get help from someone with real experience you will know more about the product going in than the snot-nosed kid trying to hock you one.

One of the reasons I went with the Samsung DLP was the new light engine that I found out about at their site.....from there I just had to find a store that stocked them (double check specific model numbers).

I couldn't be happier with my purchase thus far.

My family has gone Plasma...My dad has a 42" Panasonic, my sister has a 50" Pioneer Elite and we have a 50" LG, we are all very happy with our TV's. I know that for me (someone technically inept) that I prefer the image on the Plasma to me the images are a lot clearer and brighter.

I don't really notice this at all...

One of my reasons for liking Plasma over the others is that at any angle, the picture remains the same, there is no darkening at all.

If you wait until boxing day, or just keep paying attention to the flyers Plasma's are priced to compete. We are currently in the market for a 42" for the father-in-law and have been comparing prices...

Opus, is the DLP truly flat? or does it have a 'bulge' at the rear? We're looking for true flat body.

I've seen articles saying that LCD and plasma TV are going down in price in a huge way. Especially in the 46 inch and under range. Never really gave a reason but I suspect it's because of the 50 and up screens in LCD and plasma that have come out. I agree that the plasma is a wonderful picture but I needed to be able to play video games and that burn issue that is a plasma stigma was too much to overcome.

I got a 32in LCD for my room.... U really cant go wrong with either or.. if I decide to get a bigger screen for the living room i might go plasma.. but I have no complaints about LCDs

I want a 46'' TV for playing 360 and Wii games...and I'll prolly get a PS3 soon. I'm worried about burn in. LCDs are quite a bit more money though.

It's got the bulge.....not a wall mounter.

yeah, it requires a stand......basically a glorified coffee table

you'll be needing a plasma or LCD.


One of the things I was really surprised with was how light my set was. I can easily carry it around myself.....(weighs less I reckon than my old 27" tube model).
