Your first problem is that you appear to be equating Doctors with Surgeons, which are not the same thing.

There is a MASSIVE and CRITICAL shortage of doctors in Alberta. Hell, in Canada. Until we were about to have a child, my wife and I didn't have a doctor...but our pediatrician is also a GP and now we DO have a family doctor.

This announcement is nothing but a positive.

Alberta has a massive shortage of General Practitioners.

This is, I believe, what Stelmach is talking about.

Do you remember how this shortage was created and by whom?

This is like DM saying we need to increase our NI talent. Well, duh. So why didn't you recognize this when you were cutting it and drafting poorly?

Accountability is a concept Albertans fail to acknowledge provincally.

Good poiont. Although to be fair, Stelmach was never Minister of Health in the Klein cabinet.

I do. Governments all over Canada were collossally stupid in this regard.

It was even worse in Ontario, where I believe med schools were paid to NOT enroll medical students!

So our stupid government gets a pass because other governments were more stupid?

Maybe or maybe not. Who was responsible for making the decision of cutting back spaces at the universities for doctors? Are those people still responsible for making decisions?

The make up, internally, of a political party is just as important as a shake up of ruling parties as Government. A lot of the Tory Old Guard ... ironically the same group that got elected in the first place for replacing the previous Tory Old Guard ... is now gone.

If the Liberal party in this province is too stupid to understand that they will never be elected while their party is called "liberal", from now until kingdom come, then they don't deserve a sniff at political power in this province.

Go Steady Eddie, it's about time a farmer ran this province!

That is always the argument in Alberta. Change from within. Sure, we're the same party but we a different now.

But federally, John Turner, Kim Campbell and Paul Martin never received the same credit. They could not distance themselves from Trudeau, Mulroney or Chretien as, like in Alberta, they were supporting those making the decisions at the time.

If the electorate in Alberta can't distinguish between the 30+ year old NEP program introduced by the federal Liberals and a provincial party, they deserve what they get.

That includes, inflated capital projects, high utility costs, infrastructure debt, lack of doctors, ...

A farmer has been already running this province since Ralph Klein resigned, and he's running it wrong, and in pretty much the same way Ralph did. Tweedledum and Teedledee.

In Alberta, the geography does seem to matter. For those of us who live in cities, there is reason to be worried that things like municipal funding will be ignored to an extent. Just like Edmonton was ignored in favor of Calgary. In fact, it was Klein himself who stepping personally to ensure that certain Edmonton projects got funding, after ministers from Calgary had said no.

Doctors are in short supply everywhere, not just in Alberta. My family has to use walk in clinics in Regina, because we can not find a family doctor in the city. This is not the whole the problem though. As the article points out there is a severe lack of other staff (nuuses for example) and beds in major city hospitals that is keeping what doctors we have from doing their jobs. We can bring in 2000 doctors a year to a province, but unless the beds and the other staff are there it is, for the most part, useless. (althought ERs would be less crowded, because people had family doctors to go to.)

I like Eddie. And I might even be more aligned with PC philosophy than the other parties.

But I don't think ANY party should be in power that long.

We need a change. Even if it just for one term, it will shake the buracracy up and hopefully we'll shed some of the intrenched patronage and ineptitude.
