If the past decade hasn't taught people anything about "controlling gas prices" then nothing will.
I bought a 4 cylinder car (living in the city, what the hell do I need a fake penis extender for?)...I walk to the 7-11 for my slurpees, or to the blockbuster to rent / return moves rather than drive...and I take the bus to work.
Gas fluctuations have no real bearing on me.
And if more people were like me, the demand for gasoline would be low and all the people that do need to drive more than I do would be insulated from price shocks.Comment

Exactly. We have far more control over the price of fuel than most people realize. Consumers have their part to play in the price of gas as well. If people weren't so clueless and stopped driving all the gas guzzling vehicles like SUVs, Hummers, Land Rovers, and Heavy Trucks as passenger vehicles, then demand for gas would go down as would the price.
As it is despite sky high gas prices the sales of these types of vehicles are actually rising, because people are sheep easily suckered in by commercials and think the 1 time a year they go camping justifies the huge expense of owning one, that's not happening anytime soon.
I definitely hope the government passes an extra tax on these vehicles like they were thinking about awhile back:
