Terrible. Sad thing is this happens far more often then is reported.

          Re: Nice going Syncrude....

This wasn't an accident....the noise devices and ultrasonics used to keep ducks were not working and Syncrude knew about it...however, it does not affect their bottom line so they didn't do anything about it. The government will fine them which means they lose about 2 hours worth of production....the opposition will stomp their feet and life in the Alberta oil patch carries on....

I'm just surprised that this crap is allowed to be in an open pond to begin with, rather than being held in a sealed / secure storage facility. Is there any reclamation possible with this stuff or does it sit there forever?

As I used to be in the petrochemical industry, on every site there will be open ponds. Security for these sites are for the 2 legged variety not for wildlife and certainly not birds. Reclamation of stuff like this is possible and probably mandatory but due to processes it may not be possible to have the ponds completely empty at all times. Many times rain and snow runoff are collected in these ponds along with some process waste. Although tragic and to a certain extent negligent they were in the process of putting up the sonic cannons. Where do we draw the line? How much wildlife is run over on Alberta highways every year? Do we ban all vehicles?

I'm sure there was a sign saying the pond was dangerous.

Is it Syncrude's fault that ducks can't read?

Just another example of the dramatic need for a major overhaul to the aviary education system...

Worst aspect to this story? Three ducks were flown to Edmonton for treatment. Wow. There's some money well-spent.
I officially retract my vote for DDS as Prime Minister. He's clearly incompetent.

Yeah tough **** for the 495 ducks, i mean these guys were in the process of doing something, probably too friggin busy counting their latest quarterly profit of a few billion. Also nice of them not to contact Alta environment as per the rules but just deciding what they should do on their own. Ho hum.

Yeah probably on syncrudes penny, have to do a bit of damage control now don't we. They probably would have got shot or flown into wind farms anyway, no big deal.

So shut everything down so that Bambi and Daffy are safe and sound. See ya at the bread line. It was a accident and I'm sure that they will be taxed accordingly.
