    Love, Love Me Don't...

While there may be some legitimacy in his desire to do this, ol' Ringo proves that sometimes it's not what you say, it's how you say it...

Check out the video on his website where he announces he will no longer reply to fan mail and/or sign things.

Reactions are, as one would expect, not to glowing...

      yup...
The second half of your statement is the 'legitimacy' part. Many people thought that Ringo had scores of assistants doing the work for him. I'm sure he had some, but he more than many attempted to put a personal touch on things going to his fans.

The first part of your statement demonstrates the reaction to 'How' he chose to say this.

Too funny: Poor Ringo has always had a bit of a reputation as a grump and of course when you play alongside two supernovas like Lennon and McCartney and a bright sun like Harrison, it is easy to get a bit of a swelled head while possessing no real talent. Ringo should thank his lucky stars that Pete Best was too handsome for John's liking, otherwise no changes would ever have been made and Mr. Starkey would have become a hairdresser on the shabby end of Liverpool.

In closing, however, let me leave you with the quote from Lennon which reminds me of how much I loved Lennon (deeply flawed as he was) for his brilliant sense of humor and his sometimes brutal honesty. God, I miss you John, you were more irreverant than I am.

John Lennon once said, when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, “Ringo isn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles."

Uh....Pete Best couldn't keep time. Ringo Starr is a very good drummer. And John Lennon didn't fire Pete Best. George Martin suggested it because Best couldn't play drums very well. Epstein fired Best.

Sorry mate but Ringo is/was not a very good drummer-- just as Lennon said (I think he would know). McCartney often re-recorded Ringo's drum parts in the studio after Ringo left but nothing much was ever said. Officially, it lists Ringo but on many of the tracks that you hear, especially on the Beatle's latter albums it was Paul playing drums or it was a variety of session men and invited guests that churned out the rythmn.

I believe that Paul first "overdubbed" Ringo's stuff in the studio on Ticket to Ride in 1965.

That is absolute nonsense, mate. Total baloney. Not sure where you got that info, but you should avoid that source again in the future.

There's actually a book out there that catalogues every Beatles recording with recording dates, and who played on each track.. It's called Revolution in the Head: The Beatles Records and the 60's. The author is Ian MacDonald. It is considered one of the most reliable and accurate works on the Beatles recordings. All of the session notes and records were used in producing the book. Starr played on virtually every Beatles track after Love Me Do, which features Andy White on drums.

There is also "The Beatles Recording Sessions: The Official Abbey Road Studio Session Notes 1962-1970" by Mark Lewisohn. MacDonald used this work as a source for his book.

Regarding "Ticket to Ride" Lennon did not say that McCartney played drums on the track. He said that McCartney's contribution to the writing of the track was limited to "How Ringo played the drums". McCartney has disputed that as "incomplete" and says that he and Lennon wrote it together but "give him 60%".

As I said, officially it says that but the reality was something different.

Let's leave the last word up to Turftoe. He was the Beatle's PR director in North America after Epstein died. It's best to leave the master to settle the arguments.

geez guys, I'm not THAT old!

I think it would interest many to see the interview of Ringo done by one Eric Clapton. Much was explained about what Ringo did and didn't do. On early Beatles songs Ringo is playing a Rt Hand kit... he's left handed! Many mistakes were made, but in other cases he ended up creating rhythms that baffled people because they couldn't figure out how he did it. Rather like a certain left handed bass player on the same band who strung a rt handed bass upside down so he could play it ... he made his share of errors and had his limitations as well.

As for John's quote... well, Mr. Lennon couldn't leave a straight line like that open without some sort of cheeky remark now could he?
