Re: wcb a man holds 8
lots of chatter about this on twitter... this is where twitter can be interesting - there are (or were) people inside the building twittering about what was going on from the inside.Turf Toe:
- "...turf toe is a common malady that is more of a nuisance than a serious injury."
- "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
- "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

So being ticked off at the WCB justifies putting innocent people (i.e. the hostages) through terror and likely giving some or most of them lifelong trauma?Originally posted by Nanookster View PostNo surprise him being at the WCB, not that I have ever been there.
There seems to be this sickeningly callous reaction by many people that 'it was just a matter of time' or 'WCB is always pi$$ingo people off this is no surprise' in a way that it makes them sound like they're justifying this guys actions (not saying you were doing that Nook... just a general comment here from what I've seen via the twitterfeed). I just find it odd that the people who are quick to condemn the WCB for their lack of compassion aren't willing to show compassion themselves to the hostages and their family.Turf Toe:

I don't think they're trying to justify his actions, just it's a reality that if your organization angers enough people, there might be someone who is on the edge of taking drastic action who they push over the line. Even the WCB recognizes this and, according to this article, they prepare for such an event:Originally posted by TurfToe View PostThere seems to be this sickeningly callous reaction by many people that 'it was just a matter of time' or 'WCB is always pi$$ingo people off this is no surprise' in a way that it makes them sound like they're justifying this guys actions (not saying you were doing that Nook... just a general comment here from what I've seen via the twitterfeed).

The woman, who would only give the first name Nadia, said the evacuation was orderly. Board workers are trained on how to handle situations such as this one, she said.I thought I wanted a career; turns out I just wanted paychecks.

I hear what you're saying - and I owe Nook an apology because it did seem that 'I went off' on him in particular.Originally posted by Delorean View PostI don't think they're trying to justify his actions, just it's a reality that if your organization angers enough people, there might be someone who is on the edge of taking drastic action who they push over the line. The thing is that there is an unwritten rule on how to address these kinds of sensitive matters (in fact it is a 'written rule' for crisis communications). First address those who are most likely to be harmed, comment on that and do so with compassion. Only then should fingers of blame be pointed.
There are people out there saying 'the WCB had this coming' ... perhaps, but the innocent bystanders certainly did not! If they're ignored, while they are still in harms way, for the sake of laying blame... then the priorities of those who are saying that are skewed.
What will be interesting is if the WCB follows 'the rule' and addresses the victims first - and with compassion - before wading into the situation and the individual involved.Turf Toe:

YIKES!! Alright, I'll play...Originally posted by OpusI understand what you're saying Jack...
...and just to play Devil's advocate for a moment without trivializing these hostages plight in the least.
Were the independent contractors on the second Death Star innocent victims when it was blown up by the Rebel Alliance?
First, do we know who the hostages are?
If they are employees of WCB then your allegory works.
However, if they were just people there to get services as clients then they are most certainly innocent. In your example they would equate to other Rebels who had been captured and were being held on the Death Star (Though because of the nature of the situations they would have been seen as martyrs to a cause - not so much in the WCB case.)Turf Toe:

Re: wcb a man holds 8
I think it was back in the early 90's this happened at the Calgary WCB office.
I had to do some work there about a year after and the place was like a fortress with security everywhere and panic bottons every 8' in the halls.
I hope it turns out well but the people that don't like the WCB really don't like the WCB and that was driven home to me last week in the drive-thru at Tims with the guy in fronts sticker saying " F the WCB"2014 GREY CUP CHAMPIONS

Re: wcb a man holds 8
This could happen with welfare
This could happen with Childrens' Services
This could happen in health care
This DID happen with the WCB.
Anytime you have one organization making "money decisions" in respect of an individual there will be times where the answer is NO.
And when that answer is NO, you piss off the person who was expecting / needing that money.

Re: wcb a man holds 8
read a report (unconfirmed) that only two hostages left.Originally posted by OpusRight now I have little to no information regarding the hostage taking, and my heart goes out to those captives and their families right now.
However, as I'd prefer to think that things will end easily and peacefully in this standoff, I just wanted to go in a different direction with what you were saying....and the question posed in Clerks seemed to be applicable in this case.
edit-- to clarify, the others have been released!Turf Toe:

Re: wcb a man holds 8
The standoff is over as of about 90 minute ago. No one was injured physically, thankfully.
I was downtown today for a meeting near the WCB building. I was late because it was murder getting to my destination, the Matrix Hotel on 100 Ave. and 107 St. The area was blocked off from even foot traffic but my destination was on the edge of the area and I was able to enter through a back entrance.
This was one expensive situation, as there must have been dozens of cops and EMS personnel in the area, just waiting, in some cases. This would have been a good day to rob a bank, for anyone so inclined.
