    H1N1 shots

No one getting it? At least I am somewhat surprised by the lack of discussion.

    My family got it yesterday.

      1. I've heard there is actually mercury in the shots - not very much, but still I feel uneasy putting that in my bloodstream.

      2. I've heard of way too many people whose flu shots (for different strains) actually backfired and gave them the flu, when before they were perfectly healthy. If this happens with H1N1 I've just signed my death warrant.

      3. Most flu shots are only for the very young (children) and the very old (seniors). What makes this strain so radically different that everyone needs it? I'm 28 years old, I get enough sleep everyday, and I eat well, so I have every confidence in my immune system to fight it off.

      4. IMO the numbers for this strain are being way overblown by the media and there is no need whatsoever for mass panic at all. Last I heard there's been 1 case of the flu in Edmonton - and that person was quickly quarantined and has made a full recovery. In all of Alberta I've heard there's been only about 20 confirmed cases - hardly a pandemic in my eyes. If this was Mexico, then yes I'd say it's a pandemic, but Canada isn't even close to being that bad. Sure start stockpiling the shots now but saying everyone should get the shots ASAP is panicing way too early.

      5. I've never been in physical contact with anyone who's been overseas lately, which is where this came from.

      6. I'm not standing in line for hours in the freezing cold to get the shot. That's just open season on getting sick with something else.

Thus, I see no reason for me personally to get the shot - at least right now.

I've read the highest risk groups are children 6 months to 4 years and pregnant women. Since I am neither, I'm gonna say no. The only time I've been seriously sick was after getting a flu shot so I'm not eager to get another one.

              That is impossible.

As far a a death warrant goes, most people that get H1N1 don't die.

For the regular flu, your reasoning is somewhat sound. But scary thing about H1N1 is that young health people can die. That is the reason for the concern.

The flu is spreading rapidly in the schools. Is it H1N1? No one can know for sure until they are tested. And they don't test until it is really serious. Doctors are saying if you have flu like symptoms, assume you have H1N1.

Mexico is overseas? Unless you stay in your parents basement, you will be exposed at some point.

Never being a partaker in the whole 'flu shot' program myself (I prefer the bi annual week off as an extra holiday) I have some underlying concerns about the entire H1N1 situation. From how it's been "managed" by the powers that be in regards to ramping up hysteria at just the right time for the annual flu season, to the speed of which a vaccine is suddenly available.

For now I'm not rushing out to get it and will keep paying attention to the situation...

I think it is ridiculous how people fear what is in the flu shot, as if there is some government conspiracy. If there is any problem with it, it is due to the shot being rushed onto the market without proper testing....even that, I would say is unlikely.

That said, I'm probably not getting one. I've never gotten a flu shot, I usually don't go to the doctor unless there is something seriously wrong with me. This swine flu does not appear to be as bad as some have made it out to be, I know people who have had it, and as long as you take care of yourself you'll be fine unless you're in an at-risk demographic. I don't see this thing as that big of a deal.

                    Re: H1N1 shots

The way I look at it is this...if I'm destined to die from the friggin flu...then it's my time to go and I'm comfortable with that. No flu shot is going to make a difference for me.
On a related note, one of my employees was the first documented male casualty of H1N1 in Edmonton...he was 74...

Maybe it's just cold and callous of me, but this whole pandemic is just thinning the herd a little bit isn't it?

Different flu vaccines are developed every single year. This one is a different strain. Canadian clinical trials have not concluded, but the European ones have concluded. It's safe.

This strain of flu shares some alarming characteristics with the spanish flu outbreak almost a century ago.

Right now, in Edmonton, if you have the flu, you have H1N1.

                          Re: H1N1 shots

                          Read this story.
Healthy 13 year old dies within 48 hours.

That is what we are up against. Now this will not happen for most with H1N1. Most fight it off just fine, just like any other regular flu. And the elderly will contiue to die from this and the other flues.

It is the healthy people that have died around the world that is raising the alarm. It strikes so fast you don't have time to treat it. Especially with the way emergency wards are overcroweded already.

                          So, take your chances.

You said it yourself right here: "As far a a death warrant goes, most people that get H1N1 don't die." I rest my case

Fine. I have no wife or kids, or even nieces and nephews. I go out in public too early for school to have started yet, and leave way before school lets out. That takes care of that.

Mexico is overseas? Unless you stay in your parents basement, you will be exposed at some point.

It could be overseas if you go on a cruise....

Cold weather doesn't make you sick.

Tell that to people who get hypothermia....
