    Any computer geeks??

    Not the first question I've asked on here about Mr.Spec's brother's laptop.

    His laptop is just a cheap Acer brand laptop, I think he bought it off some tv ad. Anyways.... it has a touchpad and lately the arrow is very difficult to control. You can be trying to move it to the left and it will suddenly jump back to where you were originally dragging it from. It just goes all over the place.

    Does anyone know what could possibly cause this or how to fix it?

    My only suggestion would be to get a roller ball mouse (one with the ball on top). This would allow him not to use the touch pad at all. Other then that there are settings some place to slow down the cursor, that could be the problem

      Happened to my Acer a couple years ago after I accidentally spilt a drink over the touch pad. Unfortunately it was Fubar'd and had to use a mouse on it for the remainder of its life.

        Durrr.... I never even thought to tell him to try a mouse. lol Maybe I'll lend him one.

        I tried reading up on it and found something about there being a virus that just messes with your cursor/arrow. It apparently doesn't do any other harm to your computer, it just makes it incredibly annoying.

        I wish he would have just bought a better laptop to begin with.

          My folks have an HP with a jumpy cursor... though that's only when they try to scroll while holding down the button (then when you release upon finding your spot it quickly ramps you back up to where you started). It's quite annoying until you figure out that's the problem.

            Touch pads are flaky at the best of times. Could be that the thing is just shot. He should make sure he's using just the tip of his finger...I know it sounds silly, but my wife tends to drag the bottom part of her thumb across the touchpad while using her fingertip and it makes the thing go squirrelly. I'd bet on the touchpad shorting out as a more likely cause than a virus.

              A good starting point would be to uninstall/reinstall the touchpad driver.
