    Hockey / Sports Card Information

I just started cleaning up my basement and I found my old hockey cards. I wasn't much of a collector seeing as I only collected for a year or two and mainly only have the Pro Set Series II from 1991-92.

But I was wondering if anyone knows of any good resources for finding out if any of the cards have value. I would just like to know which ones are actually worth keeping.

If you don't have too many then walk over to a Chapters and find a Beckett monthly price guide. A quick scan of the years that you have will show you the ones worth money. Then you get to dig through the box to find them!

I can look it up for you tomorrow when I get my charlton guide. Pro-Set don't usually have a ton of value, so don't get your hopes too high..?

This topic makes me weep when I remember my old hockey, football and baseball card collections that got lost way back when.

According to the Charlton guide, Series II ran 270 cards (from #346 through 615) and if there's just the base cards, the entire set is worth $6.00

Pro Set... might as well save them for winter and burn them for heat.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

By time I came of age to collect cards it was the early 90's and cards had become big business, everyone was making them and none were worth a damn thing.

I do remember going through one of my older cousins collections one day with him, and we found 4 Gretzky rookie cards... all in mint condition... except the big pinhole right through the top of them

IF I had kept all of the cards I had lost from way back, I would have a lot of money right now. I do have some old O-Pee-Chee cards from the 80s (back when they had the gum that would cut your cheeks) still though. I believe I have a Stevie Y rookie card in not bad condition (not mint by any means, but not folded to crap either).

Mint condition, that's worth about $150.. Good find, depending how close it is to Near Mint status

Here are a few fun cards I've got with an Edmonton connection

These are from the 1923-24 Paulin's Candy set; these 5 played for the Edmonton Eskimos hockey club with hall of famers "Bullet Joe" Simpson, "Duke" Keats and (3 years later) Eddie Shore:

These guys were a goal away from winning the 1923 Stanley Cup vs the Ottawa Senators.. Definitely forgotten Edmonton legends!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured, I am pretty sure the only reason I hung on to them was in hoping they would gain value. Especially the Bure, Hasek and Lidstrom rookie cards (these might be from a different series). I do have a few other cards from other brands which I will try and check out. I will try and get a card guide from the library and check on the randoms.

When Pro-Set, Score and Upper Deck got into making playing cards around 1990, they made Millions of copies of each card. Gretzky's rookie card is only worth a ton because schmucks like us tossed 'em against walls, wrapped sets with rubber bands or our parents sold 'em in a garage sale for a nickel.

Still fun to look at the sets from that era, tho!

I ended up finding a few gems, like a Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota North Stars team card...as well as a Stanley Cup card with Mess and his wife.

Now I did find a couple cards that were priced in the range of $1 - $8...my next question is, if these are in pretty good shape is it actually possible to sell it for this price? Are there dealers in Edmonton who might buy it or should I try ebay?

I think the main cards from those old Pro Set series that were worth something were the misprints. I.e guys printed on the wrong team, one player on the front a different one on the back, etc. I know I had a bunch too. I also had a bunch of Score cards from the year they had the big hype over the Eric Lindross rookie card... I think I paid $20 for one of those... I don't even think the entire set is worth that much now
