There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I'm fairly disappointed that the masterpiece that is Cloud Atlas was overlooked. Too smart for most folks I guess.

Either Lincoln or Zero Dark Thirty will win everything due to the subject more than the actual merit.

I'll go ahead and say that the only thing that I've seen recently was Skyfall and I thought it was fantastic! Don't get to see many movies anymore.

I've seen Lincoln, and it is an excellent film. If it wins, nobody will be able to say it wasn't on merit, mate. And Daniel Day should just go pick up his statue now.

Has Daniel Day Lewis ever had a role that he didn't have some sort of "gimmick"?
          -Lincoln - make up etc
-There Will Be Blood - old western style get up etc
          -My Left Foot - duh
-Gangsters of New York - James Bond style glass eye etc

Can't think of any other films he's been in off the top of my head. The only one I've seen was Gangs though...

I"m sure Zero Dark Thirty will win. Just like the undeserving "The Hurt Locker". Politics

I had no problem with The Hurt Locker winning that year.

DDL is one of the best actors of our generation, mate. It's no gimmick. Maybe you'd like him better in latex or rubber?

Read the Life of Pi and just saw the movie on Tuesday... Loved both. May not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a fantastic story beautifully told. Ang Lee and the screen writers deserve credit for a remarkable work of art if nothing else. The movie followed the book very closely and in my opinion masterfully depicted, great casting and great effects. Glad it is being recognized.

Don't get me wrong...he goes the extra mile when it comes to getting ready for a role, but if just seems like he needs the extra stuff to make it. He's definitely not someone that's typecast by any stretch of the imagination. Keep in mind though that I haven't seen anything he's done aside from Gangs though so I'm basically just talking out of my a$$ here.

Glad to hear the Life of Pi was close to the book. Although I remember there being more animals in the boat? It's been a while since I read it though.

                      Re: 2013 Academy Award Nominees

In the foreign language category, I saw "Kon Tiki" at TIFF last fall. A idealized film about the background and journey of the epic voyage.

It is done extremely well considering they only spent about 16 million on filming. Apparently, it has had American distribution rights bought - and is going to be released in English for N. American audiences...which is hilarious since at least half the film already is in English (N. Americans can't read subtitles when they're at the theatre? Inglourious Basterds did perfectly fine with subtitling in multiple languages...)

I was so happy Avatar didn't win in 2009. I saw it once and haven't been remotely interested in seeing it again.

Admittedly I haven't seen any of this year's nominees except Frankenweenie.

Most figured Silver Linings Playbook was a sleeper, but it's got nominations all over the place. Haven't seen it unfortunately, nor most the rest (live a tad to far outside of civilization, must wait until they hit BluRay), just found it interesting.

I did see The Master... it was sort of strange, but Joaquin Phoenix was great in it, and what he did physically must have been excruciating. It got a few noms, but Phoenix is the only one who really stood out to me as a potential Oscar winner.
