SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC. TO LAUNCH ITS
    NEXT GENERATION COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM,

    IN SPRING 2006

Unrivaled Performance with the Introduction of Cell Processor and Many Advanced Technologies, and Backwards compatible with PlayStation® and PlayStation®2

Los Angeles, CALIF., May 16, 2005 – At a press conference held in Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world's most advanced Cell processor with super computer like power. Prototypes of PS3 will also be showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world's largest interactive entertainment exhibition held in Los Angeles , from May 18 th to 20 th .

PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring Cell, a processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation, graphics processor (RSX) co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI, and XDR memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts BD-ROM (B lu-ray Disc ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB (dual layer) , enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality, under a secure environment made possible through the most advanced copyright protection technology. To match the accelerating convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology, PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p (*) as standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.

With an overwhelming computing power of 2 teraflops, entirely new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real-time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time.

In 1994, SCEI launched the original PlayStation® (PS), followed by PlayStation®2 (PS2) in 2000 and PlayStation®Portable (PSP®) in 2004, every time introducing the latest advancement in technology and bringing innovation to interactive entertainment software creation. Over 13,000 titles have been developed by now, creating a software market that sells more than 250 million copies annually. PS3 offers backward compatibility enabling gamers to enjoy these enormous assets from PS and PS2 platforms.

PlayStation family of products are sold in more than 120 countries and regions around the world. With cumulative shipments reaching more than 102 million for PS and approximately 89 million for PS2, they are the undisputed leaders and have become the standard platform for home entertainment. After 12 years from the introduction of the original PS and 6 years from the launch of PS2, SCEI brings PS3, the newest platform with the most advanced next generation computer entertainment technology.

With the delivery of Cell based development tools that has already begun, development of game titles as well as tools and middleware are in progress. Through collaboration with world's leading tools and middleware companies, SCEI will offer full support to new content creation by providing developers with extensive tools and libraries that will bring out the power of the Cell processor and enable efficient software development.

Preparations are under way for launch of PS3 and new generation software in the spring of 2006.

“SCEI has continuously brought innovation to the world of computer entertainment, such as real-time 3D computer graphics on PlayStation and the world's first 128 bit processor Emotion Engine (EE) for PlayStation 2. Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PLAYSTATION 3 is about to begin. Together with content creators from all over the world, SCEI will accelerate the arrival of a new era in computer entertainment.”
Ken Kutaragi, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc..

“President Kutaragi has thrown down a gauntlet. That gauntlet is called the
PLAYSTATION 3. We here at Koei have gladly taken up the challenge, and are striving day and night to take full advantage of all the PS3's new possibilities. Our goal is to combine cutting-edge technology with a full range of artistic expression to deliver the ultimate form of entertainment, and please people everywhere.”

Keiko Erikawa, Chairman & C.E.O., KOEI Co., Ltd.

“With the arrival of the next generation computer entertainment system PLAYSTATION 3, I believe it will be possible for graphic expressions, more beautiful than before, to coexist with more deep and evolved game play which utilize the Cell architecture. I also have high expectations for the evolution by the online features that will be enhanced. We will utilize the features of the new platform and will strive to create contents that will bring new excitement for our users world wide, so please have high hopes for Konami. ”

Kazumi Kitaue, CEO, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc

“Each time SCEI launches a console, the video games business moves to the next level. With PLAYSTATION 3 it looks as if it might be time for interactive entertainment to become, finally, the world's dominant artistic medium. ”

Sam Houser, President, Rockstar Games (Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.)

“We at Namco have used and will continue to use the advancements in audio-visual technology to deliver games that are not only appealing to the eyes and ears, but that stir emotions, speak to the heart, and remain in players' minds for years to come. We are confident that the PLAYSTATION 3 is an entertainment system that will enable us to do just that.”

Shigeru Yokoyama, CT Company President, Namco Ltd.

Hisao Oguchi, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA Corporation

“Next-generation hardware platforms will enable SEGA to create new game concepts that offer more immersive interactive experiences. SEGA continues to pursue the fusion of creativity and technology by publishing only the best, more innovative content to gamers around the world.”

Yoichi Wada, President, SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD.

“Square Enix is extremely honored to have had the chance to provide you with this technical demonstration of what the Cell processor can bring to the PLAYSTATION 3 and the world of gaming. We are committed to fully backing SCEI's new computer entertainment system and plans to bring the FINAL FANTASY series to the PS3 are just beyond the horizon.”

Yves Guillemot, President and CEO, Ubisoft

“Ubisoft was one of the first major international developers to have its teams start focusing on next generation consoles. We are looking forward to developing outstanding games on Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s new system. Its powerful features will help take the industry to an even higher level in the very near future.”

With all that technical stuff you just posted how could you not go with the PS3

360 bucks seems low. I think it would be higher. Weren't PS2's around 400 when they first came out?

because Xbox360's specs are just as good, I'd think. And from what I heard alot of game makers dont like the PS3s. because U have to use their development pack - while Xbox360 is much easier to design games for...

I use to be a huge PS fan... But when I experienced the Xbox's power comparied to my PS2 - i had to get one... Xbox imo, runs laps around PS2.

What i can tell you is the Xbox will have a ****load of power... since for me its easier to understand * since its pretty much like a PC* as for the PS3's i dont

The PS3 will have the advantage this time, IMO.. they will be able to sit back and watch what happens with the Xbox 360 since it is released first and see what probs the Xbox has - and make sure they dont have the same issues.

Last time the Ps2 came out first, then the Xbox much later - and IMO the Xbox is a far superior machine - and that was hard for me to say a while ago.. i was a sony fan and detested Microsoft...

                    Don't forget about Nintendo!

May 17, 2005 - Simultaneously with its press conference Tuesday, Nintendo issued an official press announcement offering first details on the company's next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.

The console, expected for 2006, will indeed be just a little larger than three DVD cases stacked together. Nintendo is showing a number of colors at the conference this week, though all shades of Revolution will sit on a silver stand (the console can also be placed flat).

Nintendo will use the Revolution to power its new generation of games, using power the company describes as "two to three times greater" than that of the GameCube. While the company has yet to release any processor details, we do know that the system will house 512 MB of flash memory; a dual-format front-loading disc drive which handles both DVDs and GCN-format discs; wireless controllers; two USB 2.0 ports; and built-in Wi Fi support.

Perhaps most surprising, the Revolution will give players access to Nintendo's back catalog of games. That's right: you'll be able to download classic titles for the Nintendo 64, Super NES, and original NES systems -- in addition to playing your library of GameCube titles.

Nintendo will use the Revolution's wireless capabilities to offer online gaming right from the start. The company will offer an online gaming lobby, the Nintendo Wi Fi Connection, a "comfortable, inviting environment" for online gaming.

As with GameCube, Nintendo is hoping to please both big-name developers and smaller, independent studios with an architecture which is easy to develop for.

"We will show the world what a next-gen system can be. Revolution marries the strongest heritage of innovation to the future of gaming," said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. "With backward compatibility and the 'virtual console' concept, the stylish, compact body provides maximum gaming power. It will not only take home entertainment into another dimension by expanding the definition of video games, but it also will give you access to the great history of gaming."

"Our next console proves small in size but big on ideas," says Reggie Fils-Aime. "We're throwing open the doors of gaming to wider audiences, from casual players to hard-core gamers who live for the thrill of defeating an endless army of wireless opponents."

Of course, more details are coming in even now as we write. Keep checking back for the latest Revolution news direct from Los Angeles.

I'll be getting all 3 systems again I think.

                        LOL

My problem is there's games on all platforms that I love - Squaresoft games on PS, Halo, KOTOR on Xbox and Zelda, Metroid, Mario on Nin...
Plus some of the innovations Nin is supposed to be bringing out may catch sony/MS off-guard: Gyroscopic controllers, and there's rumours that Nintendo has developed a true 3D system, using technology that filmmakers such as Lucas, Jackson, and Spielberg are looking into. In fact, Lucas used this 3D technology with Ep IV one time to show it off, and he admitted that "a video game company" has already developed and tested the product...
It will be interesting for sure...

I'm going with the X360... Sony has a tendency to inflate their specs and I bet you they'll be cut down by the time it releases due to time restraints/cost. Another thing, in Sony's press conference all of their games were pre-rendered, so in other words they want the games to look like what was shown. Microsoft on the other hand had in-game playable demos that were running at 30% power and capabilities, they'll still get 3 times better before they are completely finished.

There is also a new story from ATI claiming that the GPU that is being used in the X360 is now 2 times as powerful as previously thought.. so that gives Microsoft the advantage of power over Sony once again if this is indeed true. I think cost is what will draw alot of people away from sony.. they're saying their aming for a 50 000 yen release price which roughly translates into about $465.00 US dollars... you do the math.. that's about $600.00 Canadian.. why I think the PS3 will cut their specs down because they're afraid of losing the market to Microsoft.

On the other hand Microsoft, with their newly revealed specs of the GPU is on par with Sony in terms of raw power. But they use cheaper.. (albeit, by small margins) technology then Sony. they don't use the over rated Blu-Ray disc drives, or bluetooth wireless technology which adds another $100.00 of uselessness to their console.

And the biggest determining factor for most people will be Xbox Live.. Sony can not match Microsofts online play, maybe in 10 years they'll have something respectable.. but everyone agrees that Xbox live is leaps and bounds ahead of the PS online play.

And as far as Nintendo is concerned, they don't even measure up to the PS3 or X360 in terms of raw hardware specs... bye bye Nintendo.. nice knowing you.

-- Looks like MS takes this one, but being early is not always a good thing. Actually it is usually a bad thing if console history is to be believed. The Saturn Launched early and while putting up a decent showing in japan it was smoked in the rest of the world. The Dreamcast launched early and was dusted. Not to mention all the smaller known consoles (tg-16, jaguar, etc...) unlike all the past though we are talking about MS and they have stated that they want to grow the user base from sony's hundred million to a billion. They also have the deep pockets and are more then financially sound. Advantage XBOX

                              Price Range n/a n/a
--Neither console is is currently known but since they are speculating and do not have final numbers then why not put in the rumors. IGN has recently reported on a rumor stating the PS3 launch price is targeted at under 50,000 yen. which at current exchange rates equals just over $467 US. This is not big news and is on track with their console launches in the past. The Playstation systems have always launched around that price point in Japan. If they hold true to form then a $299 dollar US launch is not out of the question. The one issue that does not look good is that Sony has recently bucked the trend with the PSP. The PSP launched for about $167 in japan but is being sold for 250 in the states. It shows the trend that the us has become the big market. There is a very real possibility that it will cost more here then in Nippon, especially when you consider tarifs and taxes applied to imports. A $399 to $499 console launch is not out of the question.

On the xbox front rumors pointed at two seperat sku's, a $299 price point sans hard drive and a $399 price point with. We all know that every xbox will have a hard drive so the seperate SKU's may be a thing of the past. At this point most industry insiders are pointing out a $299 price point with a possible bundle with added features. The point is though that nothing is that nothing is going to be hardware dependant. Every box will have the same functionality as far as game design is concerned. At best this is a tie at this point but I think MS will likely be less expensive then Sony, especially when you consider the finances MS has at it's disposal.

Controller / Bluetooth Wireless / 2.4 GHz Wireless
--This is easy, 2.4 ghz wireless is superior to blue tooth. It is more versitile, more common, faster, and has better range. Now don't get me wrong, blue tooth can do everything 2.4 ghz can do but it is not a common industry standard. Blue tooth is also more expensive wich may add to the cost of the device. It does not have the range and has not been tested. While I believe Sony would not release this if they felt speed or range was a concern I do need to question the battery life. We have not heard anything on this and I remember several of you sony fanboys moaning about the wireless battery life of xbox controller. While no number has been given it is expected to be in the 50 hour neighborhood. Not only that we know that it will have a rechargeable batterpack, we know you will be able to connect it to the console to trickle charge it while you play, and we know it is a proven technology. advantage xbox

                              Graphics Core Clock Speed / 550 MHz / 500MHz
-- Nothing really needs to be said here, faster is better. advantage sony

Graphics Processor / RSX "Reality Synthesizer" (300 Million Transistors, 90nm) / Custom ATI Processor
-- This is Fluff. At this point we do not know what can be done and what can't. Ati has consistantly taken Nvidia in the PC Card market for the last couple of video card gens, but the difference has always been minimal. The one part that ATI has always been better then NVIDIA on is the TV output. this is a draw as far as I am concerned at least until more is known, with a slight advantage to xbox thanks to ATI's superiority in the relm of DVI output.

Video Memory / 256 MB GDDR at 700 MHz / 10MB Embedded DRAM (512MB UMA)
-- This is very, very, poorly done comparison on gamespot and makes it look like sony is vastly superior when that is not the case The xbox has a unified memory architecture meaning it can pull as much memory as it needs for the graphics. Does it only need 40 megs, then go for it. Does it need 400 megs, then go for it. Not only that but it is also GDDR3 memory clocked at 700 MHZ. The biggest feature is that it has 10 megs of embeded dram in the graphics chip. That allows free antialiasing at the hd resolutions. Whether you want to admit it or not, that is a big, big feature freeing up video and system memory, quite simply it gives every dev free AA, something sony desperately needed durring the launch of the PS2. But the resolution is so high you won't notice you say. Bullshipt. You will notice, how ever minimal the difference is, you will notice. It has the speed of the PS3 video memory, it is versitile allowing devs to do what they need, it has free AA - advantage xbox.
Product Line / Sony PlayStation 3 / Microsoft Xbox 360
-- this is a preference, do what name do you like better? Playstation has the history, and even the the xbox is taking market share away from the PS2 the advantage is still Playstation.

                              Resolution / 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p / 480p, 480i, 720p, 1080i
-- Sony made sure to quote that 1080P resolution, even though it is pointless for all but the most hardcore of users. Not only that they make it sound like everygame will support it when there is no proof that sony is mandating hd resolutions. Devs will do what they can get away with. On the xbox ALL GAMES MUST SUPPORT ATLEAST 720p. On the PS3, thus far it looks to be the developers perogative. That means all 360 games will be high def, while the same can not be said about Sony, yet. The 1080p thing is also marketing spin. Every Solid Videocard major chipset can support 1080p as well, and with the power of the next gen graphics cards it would really surprise me if the xbox could not do it. The only real advantage that the PS3 has in this is that it can support dual tv outputs. I don't know how many games will support it but that is the only advantage sony has over the XBOX. While nifty, how feasable is this? Also willit support dual outputs when not going digital? Lastly is this one of those wierd cases where the videocard has two dvi outputs and to get the super high resolutions (like on the high end monitors) you will need to use both HDMI outputs? Either way advantage Sony due to the dual video output.

Controller Ports / Supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers / Supports up to 4 Controllers
-- Nothing to say here, more is better. Again the feasability comes into play and other then sports games 7 people on screen is going to be a pain. Thus the dual tv support would be my guess. I must note though that I dislike the terminology here. Sony = bluetooth, Xbox = controllers. Again why was the wi-fi thing not mentioned? Why not mention what the xbox brings to the table? Advantage Sony.

                              Digital Media Formats / Compatible with CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R / Compatible with CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R DVD-Video, DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, WMA CD, MP3 CD, JPEG Photo CD
-- Nothing really special here, more is always better because of versitility therefor advantage xbox, but what real game usage is there though? I also do not like that they quoted all the XBOX formats like that as most of the media shipt (mp3, jpeg, wma, etc...) can be put on a dvd +/- or cd-r. Sounds like microsoft fluff, but as their are specific disks for the media it is not complete bs. The only real advantage I see is that the XBOX supports DVD-RW while nothing of this is reported on the sony console. advantage XBOX
Game Media Format / Blu-ray BD-ROM / Dual-Layer DVD-ROM -- Advantage Sony. ANyone who says otherwise is a fanboi. Wether or not the space is used or needed is a mute point. the blue ray media is better then standard dual layer DVD's. This is a dissapointment to me as I would have preferred MS to put in some type of HD drive but I can understand their reasons. advantage sony

                              Integrated Communications / 802.11 B/G Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 / 802.11 A/B/G Wi-Fi ready, adapter not included
-- Well integrated is the key here. Sony is using blue tooth but I do not recall it saying anywhere that you will be able to use any blue tooth campatible device with the PS3 thus nullifying that advantage.

On the XBOX side they are quick to point out that the wi-fi adapter is sold seperately but one has to wonder how the wi-fi controllers connect then?

This is a hit or miss thing and there is not enough clear info on it. Will the controllers have a wireless option that we need to buy a seperate adapter for or is the seperate adapeter only for connecting to the internet.

Wi-fi is much cheaper then bluetooth and more prevalant. This could mean more wireless accessories at a lower cost for the 360 then for the ps3.

Then again no one knows what the integrated wi-fi on the ps3 is for? Is it only for internet connections or is it a router also?

This area is not clear enough and I call shennanigins.

Advantage tenatively Sony only because we know that wi-fi is integrated and you can connect it to a router out of the box, with MS you will need some type of adapter.

Other I/O Connectors / Ethernet (RJ45), 6 USB 2.0, CF Slot (Type I, II), SD Slot (Regular, Compact), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, 1 x Optical Audio / 3 USB 2.0, 2 Memory Slots, Ethernet Port (RJ45)
-- No one knows what these slots are for, and with all the media the xbox can read there really is no advantage here. It is good that the PS3 has a flash memory hub built into it but I have to ask why? As I see no memory card ports does that mean you will be using your own media to save games? Or are they going to pull a PSP and make you buy Memory Sticks?

One thing I am wondering about is the ethernet ports on the PS3. I thought there were three ethernet ports, also the ethernet ports are gigabyte ethernet where as the 360 is standard ethernet. Does that mean that the PS3 is actually a router? Can you connect your cable/dsl modem and use it as a wireless router? Will you be able daisychain PS3's like you could PS2's using the firewire? WHo knows? While you could still do all the same stuff on the 360 using specialized hardware Sony's ports are industry standards so advantage sony until more info is available.

Plug and Play Storage / 2.5in Removable Hard Drive (Unkown Size) / 2-Memory Slots, Support Starting at 64MB, 20GB Removable Hard Drive
-- Well with all the different types of memory cards that the PS3 can read it can be argued that the PS3 is better. Except for one thing. Every single XBOX has a 20 gig hard drive standard. No one knows if sony will follow suit or have an additional HD available at an additional cost. Additionally sony makes mad money on memory cards, will they force you to buy memory sticks ala the psp? Who knows? -- Advantage to (tenatively) XBOX unless every PS3 comes with a hard drive standard, then it will be a draw unless sony does not have a proprietary memory card.

                              Standard AV Output Connectors / 2 x HDMI, 1 x AV / n/a
-- Well this is odd? The xbox has no way to connect to a tv? This is stupid, the xbox will have a standard component/composite connection out of the box as stated in the MS press conference. Unless it comes standard with both an HDMI and an AV option for regular tv then advantage xbox. Now I am not saying that the connectors are better just that the xbox is HD and tv ready out of the box. The other limitation is that not everyone has an HDMI connection, so those cables are unlikely to be bundled in. Unless it comes with a component/compsite set out of the box the advantage goes to MS.

                              L2 Cache / 512KB L2 cache / 1MB
-- There is no need to discuss this, advantage xbox

Processor / Cell processor (234 Million Transistors) / Custom IBM PowerPC CPU
-- Here we come to the nitty gritty and as sad as it is to say, the Cell proccessor is a monster. When/if devs learn to harness this beast it will out perform the tri-core processor in pure horsepower. But just so everyone knows, the PS2's emotion engine on it's own merits can dust the the celeron processor in the xbox, so this is not really saying much. This gen may be the exception to the rule though. & Processor (2nd) / 1 Core, 7 x SPE 3.2GHz (256KB SRAM per SPE), 7 x 128b 128 SIMD GPRs, / n/a
-- I am not sure what exactly they are trying to say here. the 7 spe's and core are all part of the cell processor. I was not aware of another core although I could be wrong. this looks to me like it is just marketing fluff to make the processor look even more supperior then it all ready is. The cell on the PS2 can handle 7 instructions per cycle (one per SPE as the core is used to relegate the instructions) if the IBM artical is to be believed. Now before you flame and get your balls in a pinch. We all know that everyone has been touting that the cell can handle 8 instructions at once, well yes this is true. According to IBM a typical cell proccessor can handle one instruction per SPE and it is regulated by the cpu core. They also say that cell proccessors have 8 spe's. Well, according to sony there are 7 SPE's in the PS3 cell proccessor. I also could not find anything about a second proccessor, or a Physics processing unit on the PS3.

Another thing I do not get is why there is no mention of the three cores on the the 360 or that it can handle 2 instructions per core per cycle. The don't mention the general make up of the proccessor or anything else. This is silly and reaks of shoddy journalism and propaganda. The cell processor is a more powerful processor then the xbox processor& Processor Clock Speed / 3.2 GHz / 3.2GHz (3 Cores)
-- not that difficult to look at is it. I still don't understand what the point of all this is as it should be all part of the processor. While the clock speeds are a draw due to the cell proccessors multi core option the The cell can just do more per cycle, and because the xbox memory and clock cycle are not faster then sony's the advantage goes to sony.

Built-in Features / Backwards compatible with PlayStation 2, Stands Vertically or Horizontally / Stands Vertically or Horizontally, Interchangable Face Plates
-- Well, uhm... why does it not mention that the 360 is semi backward compatible at this point or that the PS3 is also Backward compatible with PS1 games? Honestly this is stupid, advantage playstation for the 100% backward compatibility thing (we will see how true that is) and because the xbox is not completely backwards compatable (those *******s)

                              Main Memory Bandwidth / 25.6GB/s / 22.4GB/s
-- another instance of more is better advantage sony but I doubt any of us will be able to tell the difference or that it will make that big of a deal to the Devs.

                              Audio Performance / Dolby 5.1, DTS, LPCM / 232-bit, 256 Channel
-- what the fark??? they don't even compare proper specs here. It is a draw, the PS3 will have all the audio features of the XBOX including surround sound gaming and such.

Surround Sound / Dolby 5.1 / Multichannel Output
--Again I dislike the terminology and this shows the chart is busted. The PS3 will do all the xbox will and vice versa. The audio on both these pieces of hardware will be off the hook and will be limited to what the devs want to put out. Both will support all the big audio formats. Draw

                              Fill Rate (pixels) / n/a / 16 Gigasamples/s using 4X MSAA & Fill Rate (triangles) / n/a / 500 Million/s
-- While the numbers will likely be in the PS3's advantage I have to hand these over to the 360 for the immediate future. the advantage goes to xbox thanks to the free AA because of the embeded dram. While I truly do believe the PS3 may be capable of a more then the 360, the Free AA that Devs will enjoy with the XBOX will help nullify any immediate real world performance gains the ps3 will have over the 360. This may also help to counter the Proccessor performance as well as it looks like the PS3 may require software AA again. Until devs get a handle on it though it will hurt overall performance. In the end though it will be a mute point (as God of War proves on the ps2). So immediate advantage xbox which will become a mute point eventually.

Here, this should be able to show that these 2 consoles will be almost exactly on par with eachother, with a slight advantage to either Sony or Microsoft, remains to be seen.
