The Edmonton Eskimos - Inside the Dynasty

Let me start by thanking Parkies for pushing me in the right direction to be able to get a copy of this book.

I for one am not a book reader. Most of you should be able to tell that fact just by the sheer amount of posts that I have/amount of time I spend in here. However when Parkies had mentioned this book to me a few weeks back I decided perhaps it would be worth reading. See, I grew up not knowing too much about football until about junior high/high school, and by that time it was well past the time of "The Dynasty".

I have always been curious about those teams. Growing up in Sherwood Park I had the opportunity to work at the local theatre and serve Mr. Cutler on several occasions. I knew who he was but not about his wonderful career.

I am by no means a scholar when it comes to books. I think the last one I read was "King Rat" in grade 11...(Ouch....looks worse when I type it), but I must admit that this book, if you are any sort of Eski fan is absolutly tremendous.

It was written by Danny Kepley (I would guess the offseason after their last cup win). He details many events/details about the teams that he played on as well as his entire football career from College to Dallas to here. The stories that he tells are classics and gives you insight into how those teams functioned from each individual player to management to the media.

I for one have only heard the names of Wilkinson, Cutler, Germany, Pottier, Lumsden, Potter, Boone, Fennell, Kelly and so many more. For those of you in my shoes I would strongly suggest reading this book, especially now during training camp as there are many stories from Kepley's TC days.

A few quotes from the book: (I hope Mr. Kepley doesn't mind)

Cutler on Wilkinson: "He looks like Humpty Dumpty after the Kings men tried to put him back together"

Wilkie on Cutler - "Now I know he is short and Ugly and I know he was my roomie for seven years because no one else would have him, but I don;t think he's ever received the credit he's deserved. Over the years he has been the most taken-for-granted players I've ever known."

Wilkie on Coach Campbell - "He never asked for miracles, only effort"

Kepley on the team - "We've won together, cried together and laughed together, and we've made us some fine memories."

I would mention some of the stories he told but there were too many to know where to start. I'll just let you start at page 1....

Once again thanks Parkies and thanks to Danny "Stinky" Kepley for detailing the glory years of the Esks for those of us that werent there and didnt get to see it frst hand....KUDOS TO YOU SIR!!!

Wasn't it Deis and I that were orginally talking about this? Oh well, 56Parkies pointed you to the online store, so props to him. While its hardly high-quality wiriting (you can tell it was writtne by a slightly crazy, still-playing LB) I think it adds to its sincerity that way. Its a great compelation written (incidenally mind you) at the prefect time. Yes, it was released early 1983 during the offseason. The team was living on a sporting glory that football had never and may never again see. Twenty five years later, and nobody has come even close to the EE's Five-in-a-row dominance. For a documnentation of that alone this book is worth reading.

Very awesome book. Ive read a few times but I cant find it anywhere now. I know it will sound bad but I could only get the book from the library years ago and when I had to take it back I tore out all the pics for myself.

I'd like to see more former esks write some books about this team.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

In fact our very own Mr Roberts is definitely articulate enough to do so if he ever wanted. His unique relationship with Giz and the role he played in helping Giz achieve his greatness would be in interesting one IMO. It would make a good premise for a book.

Me to. I think Giz would have a good perspective on things.

Totally agree...Of course we would expect a chapter to be dedicated to Esksfans.com...

Re: The Edmonton Eskimos - Inside the Dynasty

Glad you like it, KC.. I agree; it should be required reading for everyone who's an Eskimo fan.

I concur that I'd love to read more takes on the dynasty era by other players. Personally, I'd love to read something about the 50's 3-in-a-row gang as well. I've got interviews on video with Kwong and Parker, and they're decent, but a little "fluffy" compared to this book.

I can't take too much credit, KC.. I bought my most recent copy of it on ABEbooks.com as well, since I needed my previous one replaced ages ago..

Enjoy the Decade of Excellence book when it comes in as well!

                      cheers!

                      M.

I would definatly suggest it.....Although it just makes you wish you could see the games....Makes you wonder why the Esks havent explored putting out a DVD with some of this stuff on it....(As per Diez)
