    FLOODING

No one's brought this up? Are you too busy filling sandbags?

A flood warning has been issued for the North Saskatchewan River downstream of the Bighorn Dam, affecting the Town of Drayton Valley and the City of Edmonton.

The North Saskatchewan River at Edmonton is expected to reach bank full in the late afternoon on June 19th, causing minor flooding in low-lying areas, parks and golf courses. The warning is also applied to the Nordegg River and other tributaries of the North Saskatchewan, upstream of Lodgepole.

This isn't a flash flood, man. It takes a while for the water to drain from the land and a few days for the rivers to crest. Its been raining pretty heavy to the west south/west of you in the North Saskatchewan watershed.

OK fine. If I go to Kinsmen tommorow morning for workout, and find that I have no need to go into the building to start swimming, I'll give you this point.

            You're our source, Phenom.

Interesting to know though...if it rises 5 metres, that could affect a fair few areas.

this doesn't seem like it's going to be as bad as the flood 15-18 years ago does it? That one flooded folks out of their homes in the areas close to the river down by Muttart and Dawson Bridge.

It has come up quite high in the past few days. Might go for a bike ride tonight to check it out.

Edmonton -- Residents of low-lying Edmonton neighborhoods went to sleep last night with their basements empty and their thoughts on the swollen North Saskatchewan River.

Officials are expecting waters to rise by several metres, and it could cause some flooding.

Edmonton declared a state of emergency late yesterday afternoon , and told about 25-hundred residents they could be evacuated if the waters continued to rise.

Mayor Stephen Mandel says the measure gives city managers the power to quickly mobilize staff, equipment and other resources if the situation worsens.

The river is expected to peak later today at about 10.7 meters.

Earlier this morning, water in the North Saskatchewan has risen to 6.5 metres.

Some trails and roadways are flooded but Al Mauer, the city manager says there's no indication Edmonton will experience major flooding.

An emergency centre has been set up in a high school in neighbourhoods that could be evacuated near the river, but it will only be opened in necessary.

Residents of Drumheller, Alberta are still bracing for the worst, even though they got some hopeful news about potential flooding.

Thousands of people across southern and central Alberta have been forced from their homes because of flooding created by an intense weekend storm.

After being told to expect the worst from the Red Deer River, a logjam formed last night on a tributary, giving the City of Red Deer a break from the severe flooding that's been predicted.

It's also giving hope to Drumheller, which is further downstream.

But damage is still expected to be extensive, and water is likely to slosh over dikes that have been built to contain the water.

                              Flood aid

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein and two of his cabinet ministers will tour some of the most flood damaged parts of central and southern Alberta today.

Klein, along with Government Services Minister Ty Lund and Municipal Affairs Minister Rob Renner will tour Calgary, Sundre, the Rocky Mountain House area and Red Deer.

Renner has said that it's likely a $55-million flood aid package announced last week will be expanded.

He says they couldn't have forseen a series of storms that has left basements, roads and businesses flooded throughout the southern portion of the province.
