I'll say this: Immigrants are the hardest working people out there, working multiple jobs.

Their degrees in other countries are sometimes worthless...juggling family, work, learning a different language, isn't easy...but it gets done.
Sandy, I'm with you on multiculturalism, and I'm most certainly not saying they all land up on the street or in these gangs we hear about that cause trouble.
I dont have the statistics at my disposal, but I can tell you that it is fairly common knowledge that a reasonable amount of immigrants do land up impoverished, and it is up to the gov't to decide who can be valueable members of society and add to country. Unfortunately we cant control those born here who end up on the streets, but we can control who we let into the country, and I think its a waste to let someone in if all the signs point them not becoming a valid part of society.
I am an immigrant as well, and I know its tough to adjust to the language and the culture, but the bottom line is we need people that will help society out. Most immigrants are the hardest workers, but for every hard working person there will always be that one bad apple that ruins it for them.

I also agree that foreign credentials not being honored in Canada is a problem that should be dealt with.

I would love it if we could feasably let every person from anywhere in the world to live in Canada, but we have to be prudent in maintaning a healthy balance in society, and being liable for those who are granted citizenship in this country.

      1) I don't buy that (bold).

      2) Care to provide an example of a ''bad apple?''

I agree with some of what you're saying....but I just don't understand how the topic of murder brings up discussion of whether to deny/allow immigrants into the country?

        Re: Murder city!

Here in Regina its not a case of immigrants doing crime. For one, immigrants are smart enough to stay away from Sask in the first place. But seriously and without being racist, its mostly the native population in Regina that is responisble for drug dealings, murders and various crimes. Not saying its only natives but its the majority.

ummm... blaming people from other countries? puh-leeze!
            a) Unless you're an aboriginal Canadian it can be said that you are from another country. Period.
            b) What makes a Canadian a Canadian? My father moved to this country. He considers himself a Canadian. And he now holds an Order Of Canada.
            c) And to finally shoot this down - two "non-immigrant" names... Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. Two white-bread Canadian kids... sexually assaulting and murdering girls. No immigration changes would stop that.

My parents worked hard to at least bring some skills and the ability to speak English when they immigrated here.
As a side note to this comment.....

What is sillier IMO is when we let immigrants come into Canada based on their skills and then dont recognize them when they get here...forcing them to either take low paying jobs that werent related to their skills or to go back to school.

We have friends that immigrated from Ghana. They were allowed to immigarte based on his work in the refridgeration/heating industry. When he got here he was told his ticket was no good. He has gone from job to job and is now looking into getting his formal training in something he already knows how to do. He will have to work full time and go to school in the evening and weekends to support his 5 children....How does that make any sense???

The govt needs to come up with some sort of bridging program for these types of people....

Damn straight! well said! I've often thought the same thing. You have qualified engineers or nurses, etc. who just need a minor amount of 'transitional training'. But these smart, capable people end up with something far from what they could/should be doing.

Unfortunately there are many in the Chinese community who don't even have the basic English skills to even ask for directions. And they slag me for not being fluent enough in Chinese

With regards to skills, that's how you start life in a new country. Engineers from foreign countries start as Cab drivers while learning the new language and taking classes at NAIT/U of A.
There needs to be some follow up on new immigrants to see how well they are adjusting and adapting to life in this country. See how well they're faring in trying to learn new skills, or finding some type of work, and learning the language. More often than not, they just get dumped into society and end up trying to keep their head above the water.

That said, next time you hear someone speak in their native language doesn't mean they dont' know english....it's just that they prefer to keep their culture....
I certainly encourage that, however there needs to be some sort of balance between their culture and Canadian culture.

Which brings up another excellent question in "What is Canadian Culture"??

I would like to think that Canucks are intellegent/tolerant enough to consider our culture to be that of a world culture....

Chinese/Indian/African/American....etc etc etc are all a part of our culture IMO. I would personally be hard pressed to define a "Canadian Culture" as anytihng but a giant collection of all cultures....

                      Maybe its just me....

                        Hockey and beer, of course!

I guess by Canadian culture I was referring to the Eng/Fr languages more than the "culture" aspect itself.

All I remember is the police chief 5 years ago bold faced lying to the public about how there's no gang problem in Edm. 25% of our homicides this year are directly gang related and how many others are a result of the gang controlled drug trade?

The gang problem is along racial lines.

I was reading a recent Readers Digest and you should see some of the case studies they had in there. We are letting known criminals into our country. One guy from Mexico wasn't ruled a terrorist as the only people he killed were policemen and soldiers!
