    West Virgina Mine Incident

Family members and media were told just over 3 hours ago that 12 out of the 13 miners that were trapped were alive after being buried for 40+ hours... just now news has come out that the news was false and innaccurate and only 1 person has survived and he's in critical at a hospital.

    Just unbelievable.

That's terrible, facts really need to be set straight before stories like this break, especially in cases like this.

Those poor families. What a terrible mix-up.

I can't remember where I read it, but I heard that the company had something like over 100 violations, but had to pay fines of less than $5000.

This was after the law was changed so that the inspectors had to give the mine owner 24 hours notification that they were coming.

I believe that there are many things the government has no business in my life, but environmental and work condition inspections are not an area that people should get a free pass.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

While the mix up was tragic, I don't think it was done maliciously.

Mate, there is no excuse for such a mistake. Imagine what its done to those families! How can such a mistake be made?

                      Re: West Virgina Mine Incident

Easy, the resuers are so desperate for any news that once they found a survivor, word spreads like wildfire with no one taking the time at the end of the news chain to verify that the report is accurate. All it takes is for one person to misunderstand the info as the word spreads rapidly.

So whomever reported it (a journo I take it) should be hung in the town square.

                          Re: West Virgina Mine Incident

There was miscommunication between the rescuers in the mine and the mine officials. They received word that the rescuers had found 12 miners, however they had not checked vital signs yet and word got out through cellphone that the 12 miners had been found alive. Mine officials knew of the mix up 30 minutes after the information was inaccurate but decided not to tell anyone because they wanted to be "sure".

You are exhausted and worried about 13 co-workers...perhaps friends...who have been trapped 2 miles underground for 2 days.

You know there has been an explosion

You know there is a heavy risk of a CO leak.

Rescue workers go down in the mine and report, "We found 'em" You can't convince me that ANY of us wouldn't have hoped that it meant "alive" rather than dead...to say you found the men is ambiguous at best. But for people starved for some word on the miners, it's no wonder the signals got crossed in this instance.

It's easy to say that "they should be hanged" but I can totally see how and why it would happen and would suggest that not anyone one of us on this site would react / act any differently.
