    What to do intown?

I'm coming down for the Labour Day re-match at Commonwealth. I want to stick around town, and see some of the sights. What's good to do? The Mall of course, Whyte Ave, but what else? Best places to eat? stay the night?

And here's a good one...what's the best way to get to the game...is their LRT?

Go to the UofA and take the LRT, it goes straight to the stadium.

do you know what side of town you'll be staying on (hotel?), and what do you like to do / interested in doing?
Before you insult a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you insult him, you'll be a mile away, and have his shoes.

New Asian Village on Saskatchewan ave (East Indian Food)

Julio Burios on Whyte (mexican food)

        Outback Steakhouse (calgary Trail)

are all good options to eat out.

If you want some eye candy, go to the Rum (west Edmonton Mall).

You gotta eat at The Louisiana Purchase. Great cajun food.
Taylor Field. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

Hey Grant...we can continue to take blind stabs at what might be best for you...but if you let us know where you are starting from, it would help.

                  Re: What to do intown?

I wish I could do this in a more face to face way, but alas, I can only check out the site when the boss is gone.

I think we're staying at Edmonton House, but no matter where, a drive isn't a big deal. I guess we just want to hit the best places. Like what's trendy and new. I can't remember the last time I was in Edmonton, but I loved the river, and walking around downtown.

Knowing how to get to the game is key, so thanks for the University suggestion.

Other than that, you guys made some good suggestions, thank you very much.

                    Re: What to do intown?

If you are anywhere's downtown Edmonton than to get to the game I definately recommend that you take the LRT to Stadium Station -- just follow the crowds. It's $2.00 for a one-way trip.

As for food, if you can afford it (need deep pockets), I highly recommend Japanese Village, The Sawmill in Oliver Square, and the Union Bank Inn. The first and third are in the downtown, the second is just north east of downtown.

Barring that, I would suggest the Sicialian Pasta Kitchen, Joey Tomato's, or Earls Tin Palace. These are ALL on Jasper Ave and easy to get to. The last two feature kick-ass patio's and HOT waitresses.

If you are looking for something not-so-pricey, I suggest Brewsters Pub (numerous Edmonton locations) and the usual: Moxie's, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, etc.

As for nightlife, you can't really beat Whyte ave for variety and flavor. My faves are: Funky Budda, Wooley Booley's, and Hudson's Canadian Taphouse. If you are bringing a wife/girlfriend and she wants to dance, then the Iron Horse and the Roxy are good bets. Cook County Saloon is also in the proximity and is a good time as well.

If wading thru drunks isn't your idea of a good time, go to any Sherlock Holmes pub (there is one downtown and is very close to Terry Vaughn's). Brewsters is also a good place to drink.

For the West End, I definately recommend the Rum for incredibly hot women, as well as Dante's. The Cowboys on the West End is good too...but no where's close to Calgarys.

If you aren't into boozing it up, then West Ed is a good place to find amusement and if you are in the South End of the City, I'd recommend Gateway Lanes (which includes the comedy factory).

If you are in the north, you shouldn't pass up Yuk Yuks which has just moved to this location.

For late night eats -- read pizza -- the best places IMO are (in no particular order):

Chicago's -- but you can't order it from a cell phone
                    Chicago Deep Dish
Funky Pickle Pizza -- but you should walk and pick it up rather than rely on delivery
                    Pizza 73

                    hope that helps.

                      not a bad list Muley.....

I have to ask now.....has anyone else been to Hy's steak loft? I've found it to be the best steak in town.....I also forgot about the Harvest Room at the Hotel MacDonald (both are rather upscale). If you are looking for a decent watering hole that won't burn you for watered down drinks try my fave Sportsman's Lounge (50th st, just north of the Sherwood park fwy).

Since you like the river valley, go down to Rafters Landing and check out the Edmonton Queen paddle wheeler......

That is an awesome list. I've printed it out (on the company printer) and will make sure I use it as a guide.
