    Vitamin T update...

For those who appreciate fine Vitamin T... I thought I'd share some new additions to my collection.

    Galardon - reposado
    > the greenish tinge doesn't help. It's a bit rough and unfinished tasting. Shoots well though as it doesn't really linger on the palate.

    Corazon - reposado
    > very nice, mellow but almost bland. A good intro for those who think all Vit T is paint thinner. Great 'legs' in a snifter and because it's nice it's good in the heat.

    Coralejo - reposado (Triple Distilled)
    > Most Coralejo comes in a tall bottle, but the Triple Distilled comes in a wonderful flattend round, blue bottle. Not open yet

    Partida - Anejo
    > Very classy looking, simple Mexican glass bottle. Numbered batch distillation. Not open yet.

Ahh yes, but how well do you post after finishing half a bottle..? I think some further experimentation is in order!

So long as it isn't that golden underwear that Pizmo was talking about

I'd mention something about how you would probably try to get your dog to give you some lucky Eskie poo as well - but then you got made fun about that enough after the last GC

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

                        Re: Vitamin T update...

It’s been a while since discussing the venerable Vitamin T… as I was reminded by 5DT’s recent thread!

I’ve have the good fortune of having some fine Vit-T recently! And some disappointing samples as well.

I’m nearly finished the last of my Partida Anejo. This is still one of my most favourite Tequilas. However, I’ve noticed a degradation of flavour as the volume of liquid decreased. Ever had this happen Diez? Made me think about using one of the ‘air extractor’ gimmicks they sell in wine stores to keep wine fresh.
                        http://www.polishedpalate.com/events...n/partida.html

Recently, I discovered a surprisingly good, inexpensive tequila – though it is offered up as a Mezcal! It’s something that even my snobbish Vit-T taste buds accept for general use in mixes as well as periodic sipping. ‘Mezcal Jaral de Berrio’ is only 35% alcohol, but it is made from 100% Agave (Agave salmiana or Pulque Agave which is one of the oldest types of Agave used to make both Pulque and Tequila). Now as for the naming this gets messy… traditionally speaking, all Tequilas are Mezcals, but not all Mezcals are Tequila. Mezcal is made from the Maguey plant which is in the same family as the Blue Agave. The best way to describe this is “There are many different subspecies of maguey plant, and each produces a different taste of mezcal. Tequila is a mezcal made from the blue agave plant in the town of Tequila and the surrounding region of Jalisco.” At any rate… at $36ish/bottle it blows the doors off of any standard Tequila Gold or otherwise.
                        http://www.jaraldeberrio.com/index2.html

On the way back from our trip out west I stopped in at a Liquor store outside of Minneapolis that alternately left me salivating and my liver cringing! What a selection!! I picked up a couple of bottles of Vit-T.

                        1. Tezon Anejo. Read your Vit-T labels carefully… this is actually made by Olmeca. I’ve had their standard tequila and it’s quite wretched. The lady working at the store said it was a new product and had had great reviews. Knowing that many Tequila distillers have regular and ‘premium’ products I went along with this. Turns out she was likely spouting off some PR and I fell for it (oh the irony!!). This is the kind of Tequila that gives truly good tequila a bad name. As an anejo it is rough and lacking in depth. It certainly wasn’t worth what I paid!
No surprise that I can’t find much mention of this stuff online!

                        2. On the other hand… there is the bottle of Gran Centenario Anejo. Checking the label I see that it’s made by Gallardo. I seem to recall having some Gallardo Reposado previously (through a miscommunication my collection of empty Vit-T bottles was tossed!) and it was a serviceable drink - likley the Galardon I mention above. I figured that this would be worth the try. Wow… what an amazing Tequila! In the same way that there are all kinds of different Scotch – some lighter than others, some smoky, some peaty – this is the ‘scotchiest’ Vit-T I’ve had and depending on what you’ve had on your palate can seem like a very good bourbon… Smoky, warm and tingly. This is a winter Tequila and it is delicious!
                        http://tequilasource.com/grancentenario/index.html

(As a side note I also picked up a bottle of ‘Rain’ vodka from that liquor store which is made from corn! I was sceptical to say the least, but wow have I ever been impressed! Every bit as ‘clean’ as Belvedere or Grey Goose, but somehow smoother! A martini made from this stuff after it’s been in the freezer – and with only 1 drop of vermouth – is heavenly! Though I did have to bite my tongue about the ‘organic’ crap! http://www.rainvodka.com/pages/whoAreWe.html )

Now just this past Thursday I met an editor friend for lunch at a little Mexican restaurant (an authentic one, not a ‘tex-mex’ one). I’ve slowly gotten to know Cesar the proprietor and I noticed that he had a bottle of Jaral de Berrio Mezcal. I had to get his take on that because he is quite the Vit-T expert! (He admitted that as a Mezcal, and for the price, it’s quite good.)

As the discussion went on my friend Tom admitted that he was a scotch drinker to which Cesar right away said… “you like scotch? You try this.” And with that he pours us just a little bit of Don Julio 1942. Very smoky and quite nice. Some more conversation as I ask him about some of the Vit-T I’ve been trying and he says “you want to try a GOOD tequila? Vamanos!” And off to the back of the restaurant we go.

There he opens a wooden box containing, nestled in velvet lining, a bottle of ‘Herradura Seleccion Suprema’. This goes for between US$300-400!! Even though he’d only part with a tiny bit it was enough. It felt like drinking summer… warm, but not cloying, airy, but not strong tasting. Incredible stuff. Words can't really describe it!

Cesar is hosting a Tequila tasting party in September featuring 50 varieties of Vit-T!! You can bet I’ll be there!

Diez... you're coming to GC, right? I'll warn Cesar!

This was a very nice medium-bodied tequila. Flavourful and easy to drink. Another that I'd buy in a heartbeat.

Very nice and quite reminiscent of a light cognac. Flavours are mellow, but full. I'd love to have access to this all the time so that I could always have it in the bar. Possible problem with oxidation (due to poor fitting corks after the seal is broken?).

Yup, they say once a bottle is cracked it should be consumed within 30 days or stored in the freezer. By bottle of 1921 Anjeo is finished. It certainly was an old world mexican tequila with a strong taste. Not sure if I would buy again or not.
