You are a good friend of mine, mate, but I can't believe what I'm reading. Paint every Muslim with the same brush because it makes sense? Muslim doesn't refer to race, it refers to RELIGION!!! How do you identify one, by the colour of his skin? What about the Arab Christians? Are they exempt because of their religious beliefs? What about the white Muslims? Where do they fall?

Racial profiling is not freedom, period. Slippery slope, indeed.

EDIT - I still love ya, though. Don't go changing, to try and please me...
My friend, allow me to now accuse you of "head buried in the sand" syndrome. I mean no offense, but the profiling is regionally based, much more than racially so. It just so happens that 99.87654% of all people from the countries being profiled have brown skin.

    And yes, it makes sense.

Of course those of Arabic descent are singled out. 100% of the terrorists that have hit North American and Britain were Muslim. 100% of those arrested for planning to attack Canada were Muslim. It's not racism. It's common sense.

As for New Orleans, that had nothing to do with race. It had to do with means. The middle and upper class had the means to get out on their own, or get to the evacuation points quickly. The poor simply didn't have the ability to move as fast. Same measures taken by the government. Different capacities of the various income classes.
With all due respect, you have no idea what racial profiling is or its effect on a people and its community. Do you have any idea of what affect this has on the psyche of a racialized (and usually poor) community and the distrust, and consequently a lack of cooperation, it breeds for authority? Have you ever lived in a community where you have to remind your kids to bring ID with them because you know that cops have the habit of stopping them for questioning once a week? I won't pretend to be an expert on racial profiling, but many police forces in Canada are beginning to recognize that race-based profiling is damaging and ultimately not effective - they are now being trained to profile on behaviour, not race. This is applicable not only to race-based policing, but in combatting terrorism.

I suggest that you read The Colour of Justice: Policing Race in Canada (http://www.irwinlaw.com/books.aspx?bookid=121). Not only does the book analyze these issues in terms of race-based policing, but it also applies the same principles to the "War on Terror". And no, this is no left-winged opinion piece - it's based, amongst other things, on judicial decisions, narratives and studies with the cooperation of police. The author is a highly respected former appellate-level defence lawyer in Ontario.

I ask everyone to think about one thing, and please keep an open mind. You're boarding a flight, and you are pulled aside, put in a room, not told what is going on for hours on end, and the explanation given to you is: Well, you are a white male between the ages of 30-55, work for the Catholic church, no children and are flying to Belgium. You fit the profile of a child molester, so we need to make sure you're not. Expect this to happen pretty much anywhere you go." Us white folk wouldn't put up with that, would we.

It's no skin of our white asses when this happens, I guess. I had always thought we were protecting the freedom of ALL, not just the lucky ones.
Its worth mentioning that a law in the US still exists that you are not allowed to take more than two Arab men into secondary screening per flight.

If they are angry about the situation, my suggestion would be to direct that towards the minority of muslims who give the rest a bad name. Its my understanding that in major centres like Toronto and Montreal, you can get Jihad materials if you find the right Mosque.
Another headshaker. Have you ever heard of Soldier of Fortune magazine? It has everything you need to do anything violent you'd want.

I cannot believe I am 'wrong' because I don't think racial profiling is the best way to catch terrorists. I'm happy to be in the minority on this one.

Maybe not the best way, but still a useful tool that makes sense to use.

I wonder if this issue would be treated differently if people in these countries were marching in protest against bin Laden, and against terrorism. So far that's not happenening anywhere...except Iraq.

I forgot to renew my Soldier of Fortune subscription so Im not an expert , but from my understanding it doesnt blatently incite hate towards certain groups of people. While Soldier of Fortune does attract some wannabe's who can use the material to cause harm, it certainly isnt the target audience and the majority of its readers.

                  100% correct. Common-sense.

Just tell me what part makes sense. Shouldn't everyone go through a heightened screening process now? And if I was Al-Quida, wouldn't this be the best thing that could happen to me. "Hey, Akmed, go out and get a couple of white guys to bomb the LAX, they'll never suspect a thing."

We disagree because we can. All I am saying is that we are not going to catch the next guys if we need to 'make sure every Muslim in the world in not a terrorist by making them prove they are not first."

So where are these Mosques you talk about that do what you say they do? And what if SOF magazine was Arab owned and operated, would it still be allowed?

It makes sense because when these acts of terrorism occur in New York, London or Madrid, people from these countries are dancing in the fckin streets, mate!

Yes, it would. If it incited violence or hatred it would be banned, just like SOF would be now.

What about the universal condemnation of the US, Spanish, and UK terrorist attacks by the Arab world. Is that all moot now because they are speaking out against Israel.
