    A new level of parity?

We've seen a lot of curious moves made by teams during the off season which were necessitated by adherence to a cap that has teeth (granted the teeth may be a bit dull, but they're at least there). This meant a fair bit of roster juggling in one way or another - and those teams who didn't do that, will soon have to.

Now we're seeing some surprises early in the season. It's not quite the cake-walk we thought for some teams. Sure there's lots of season to go, but there are some interesting developments to be sure.

And this has got me wondering... are we on the cusp of realizing what the SMS could actually do for the league? That is to create a type of parity whereby it will be very difficult for any one team to maintain any sort of dominance for more than a couple of years. If so, I can't really complain because, realistically, that's the way it should be in an 8 team league.

I think that if we do end up seeing all the teams get 'leveled out' thanks to the SMS, that future increases in the cap will only improve the quality of the game by enabling all the teams the opportunity to improve equitably.

I'm not suggesting that we're in the land of milk and honey (especially not here in Edm), but I can very easily seeing a much stronger overall product within a couple of years.
    Turf Toe:
    - "...turf toe is a common malady that is more of a nuisance than a serious injury."
    - "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
    - "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

Seriously, you make some very valid points.

I have said in terms of the Eskimos, that the way Hugh Campbell built his teams in the latter years of his tenure as President, CEO & GM was by throwing a lot of money at free-agents. The Eskimos could do this because they had more money than anyone else.

With the SMS, they can't do it anymore and it has really evened out the "playing field," so to speak. The SMS has also uncovered some major weaknesses and flaws within the Eskimo organization. The biggest one was Hugh Campbell presiding over the demise and dismantling of the Eskimo scouting system with the retirements of Ray Newman and Frankie Morris.

To his credit, Danny has recognized this and has worked hard to put a new scouting system in place with the likes of Paul Jones, but moreso with the appointments of Dan MacKinnon and Ed Hervey. The system is not perfect, but it continues to grow and is starting to produce dividends.

        Cheers,

        SH

I wouldn't say parity when the same League that has great clubs like the Edmonton Eskimos, Hamilton TiCats and Montreal Alouettes also has a High School club playing in Vancouver, no offence intended TT.

I would agree with this. I don't think anyone here could have predicted Montreal and Hamilton would be 1st and 2nd in the east, respectively, and Winnipeg would be in the basement after 2 games. Granted, it is only 2 games, but.....

Not to mention the Team the majority of experts predicted to win the 2008 Grey Cup the B.C. Lions at 0-2!

It looks to me like those "Experts" didn't attend training camp in that case. The signs were there, IMO.

But that is EXACTLY the point L. Dominance is no longer a given. I realize that you're not particularly happy with the way the Lions have come out of the gate (but is that worse than all the seasons where they rattled off a mitt-full of wins only to choke late in the season?).

The thing is that it is becoming more apparent that team strengths will have more to do with what the teams do on the field now, than what they did in the last season. Sure there will be some carry-over, but it may not mean as much as it used to.
