I can understand the reasoning behind it. Poor economy means teams and the league have to watch what they spend. No issues on this in my opinion.

The following comments refer to the NHL cap:
If I were king of the world, I'd cut it in half, halve all player salaries, halve ticket prices so the ordinary Joe can afford to go and bring some sanity to this world. But I'm not king.

For the CFL cap, it should be significantly higher and the player roster should be enlarged.

Our players don't exactly get paid a whole lot right now, and ticket prices aren't exactly through the roof. It's good where it's at.

Oops, I didn't open the link and thought this was the NHL cap. My comments stand for the NHL but for the CFL I'd favour increasing both the CFL cap and roster numbers. My bad.

If the economy was not tanking then I would agree with expanding the roster and the cap to go with it, but the way things are going this is the right move.

I was hoping to see the cap go up steadily each year, but I can understand the thinking for not raising it this year.

Seriously, they used to have something they called "gate equalization," where the "haves" would contribute dollars to a fund to help the "have nots." I don't know if this is still the case or not with the salary cap.

One thing they might consider doing is to reduce the roster by one non-import and add another import. There is no question that top-end Canadian players command big $$ whereas import players are paid far less.

This was posed to Cohon last night on Bob McCowan's show on Sportsnet and he was deliberately evasive with his response. It would obviously have to done through a change in the CBA, and would be met with considerable opposition by the CFLPA.

I never really thought of that before... that would be one way to fix the supply and demand of it... but would also force less canadian content...

Years ago the CFL allowed imports to play as non-imports if they had played here for five years. Some players this affected were Parker ,Bright ,Coffey, Lancaster, Nelson , Miles, Pleon, Pitts ,Faloney,Shatto etc. There might have been the need to obtain Cdn. cittzenship also involved , not positive about this last part. Maybe now is the time to relook at something along these lines. If an import stays with one team for five years then let him have non import status for football purposes. Forget the change in citizenship part.

Right now the SMS is forcing the release of some good import players. If they were Cdns for football purposes then teams might keep them longer and we would see a better brand of football. Maybe a two or three limit per team.

The negative part of this is that it means less jobs for Cdn college players. IMHO college ball in Canada is improving every year . As a big fan of U. football here I wouldn't want to see Cdns. not playing at the U. level because they see little chance of pro careers .
