It looks to me like the Bombers may be planning to go with a 3-4 defence next season if this report is true. If memory serves me correctly, Mark Nelson likes to run a 3-4.
Report: Simpson Agrees To Pay Cut To Stay With Bombers
It appears Barrin Simpson's days with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers may not be over after all.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Simpson has agreed to accept a pay cut in the neighbourhood of $65,000 to remain with the club. A league source told the newspaper that Simpson's salry would drop from about $180,000 down to approximately $115,000.
While the team would not confirm the report, director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson is under the impression that Simpson will be back this season.
"There have been contract discussions with Barrin that I believe will have a positive outcome," Hodgkinson told the Free Press while scouting for the East-West Shrine Game.
The veteran middle linebacker missed most of last season with a torn pectoral muscle and, when he was not activated for the East Semifinal, it appeared the 31-year-old was on his way out of Winnipeg.
With Zeke Moreno and Joe Lobendahn already at middle linebacker, the report indicates there is speculation that Lobendahn may be moved to the weak side should Cam Hall and/or Ike Charlton leave via free agency.
Another possibility has the Blue Bombers switching their defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4 set-up, making depth at linebacker a necessity. With Mike Kelly replacing Doug Berry at head coach, and defensive coordinator Mark Nelson starting fresh, the defence could have a new look.
