Barrin Simpson Takes $65,000 Pay Cut To Stay With Bombers

    This from TSN.

It looks to me like the Bombers may be planning to go with a 3-4 defence next season if this report is true. If memory serves me correctly, Mark Nelson likes to run a 3-4.

Report: Simpson Agrees To Pay Cut To Stay With Bombers

It appears Barrin Simpson's days with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers may not be over after all.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Simpson has agreed to accept a pay cut in the neighbourhood of $65,000 to remain with the club. A league source told the newspaper that Simpson's salry would drop from about $180,000 down to approximately $115,000.

While the team would not confirm the report, director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson is under the impression that Simpson will be back this season.

"There have been contract discussions with Barrin that I believe will have a positive outcome," Hodgkinson told the Free Press while scouting for the East-West Shrine Game.

The veteran middle linebacker missed most of last season with a torn pectoral muscle and, when he was not activated for the East Semifinal, it appeared the 31-year-old was on his way out of Winnipeg.

With Zeke Moreno and Joe Lobendahn already at middle linebacker, the report indicates there is speculation that Lobendahn may be moved to the weak side should Cam Hall and/or Ike Charlton leave via free agency.

Another possibility has the Blue Bombers switching their defensive scheme from a 4-3 to a 3-4 set-up, making depth at linebacker a necessity. With Mike Kelly replacing Doug Berry at head coach, and defensive coordinator Mark Nelson starting fresh, the defence could have a new look.

That's almost a rookies salary right there. Didn't realize he was making that much. Good on him though for taking a cut to stay with a team he enjoys.

My respect for Simpson just went up a notch.

      Good for him.
These pretzels are making me thirsty.

Well, good on him. They could do well in the 3-4, Doug Brown would be an effective nose tackle, but Canada doesn't fit....or he moves out to LB.

Or, he's traded to the Eskimos.

I'd take him if he's Canadian, but I don't think he is.

              No, he's Canada, not Canadian.

B, b, b, b, . . . but who's going to replace Brandon Guillory that DM is going to let go?

I hope they got him some comps at The Gentlemen's Club.... lap dances surely don't count against the salary cap...

Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

If they go 3-4, Canada and Walls are both on the smaller end to play the ends. They might fit a linebacker role as either a middle of weak-side I would think but they already have at least 3 guys for those positions and need a strong side coverage type player. Actually a bigger DE like Guillory would likely fit well in a 3-4... maybe Kelly will be talking to him (if he doesn't go to the NFL)

                      Barrin Simpson Returning To Bombers

WINNIPEG, MB – The Blue Bombers welcome back their ‘Minister of Defence’ today, as the veteran middle linebacker has re-signed with the Winnipeg Football Club.
As per team policy, details of the agreement are not disclosed.

Simpson (5-11, 230, Mississippi State ’99, DOB: Oct. 1, 1977 in St. Louis, MO) is a natural playmaker who’s physical ability is only matched by his sportsmanship and leadership.

“He’s a dynamic player and has the versatility that will allow us to play some different fronts. He has the athleticism to run around a little bit and once he sees where the ball’s going, he gets there in a hurry and not in a good mood,” said Bomber head coach Mike Kelly.

Simpson has been consistently excellent throughout his eight year CFL career, and his first three seasons with Winnipeg. He is a six-time CFL all-star in his career, including 2006 and 2007 with Winnipeg. Simpson led the CFL in defensive tackles in 2001, 2002, 2003, and most recently with Winnipeg in 2006, when he was also named the East division Defensive Player of the Year. Simpson was also the West division Defensive Player of the Year in his rookie season in 2001.

Last season Simpson was leading the league in defensive tackles before getting hurt in the fourth game of the campaign. The injury forced him to miss the rest of the regular season and East semi-final game.

“He demonstrated his work ethic following surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. Under the direction of athletic therapist Al Couture, Barrin was rehabilitated and ready to play ahead of schedule,” said Director of Football Operations, Ross Hodgkinson.

A popular teammate and fan favourite; Simpson ranks sixth on the Blue Bombers career list in defensive tackles with 251. His CFL career totals are more impressive, as he ranks fifth all-time in the league with 698 defensive tackles.

The Blue Bombers originally acquired Simpson when he signed as a free agent in 2006, after spending the first five seasons of his career with B.C.

I'm thinking Zeke Moreno is gone, but time will tell. Even with a 3-4 set.
