    Cohon Asks For Fans Input

    http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=308003

This year he is asking for fans input into how to make changes to overtime.

I like that he is reaching out to the fans and asking for our opinions. Very solid move by the CFL.

I was just about to post this. I hope they are not even close to thinking of changing it to the sudden death format like the NFL. Keep it as is, or go to a timed game, personally I like it as is.

Move 'em back to mid-field to start the drives/halves... simple as that, that format is alright, just need to make them do something to "earn" FG range
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I also like the idea of backing them up a bit...although you never know, it might wind up in more ties going in the rule books. If a team is tied at that point...there's a good chance that it's a full on battle for every yard and add to it the fatigue that sets in by then...
I think this last season had the most overtime games that I can ever remember seeing.

          Agreed

            My response that I sent...

Regarding OT – My first choice would be to revert back to the old system of two 5 minute halves. This truly allows for all elements of football to be taken into account including special teams and clock management, two things that are currently not a part of the OT system. I believe this will appeal to purists and fans that have been following the game for some time, but recognize that it might not have the edge-of-your seat excitement that is part of shoot-outs and it may also play havoc with some broadcast times if they need to allot for that much extra time occasionally.

My second choice would be a variation of the current format, but instead of starting at the 35 yard line, have the defending team kickoff from their 10 yardline. Based on an average kickoff from the 35 yielding field position on a team’s own 35, moving the kickoff back 25 yards should yield average field position near the opponents 50 yard line. A great return puts you into immediate field goal range, whereas a great kick cover could pin a team back in their own end. This makes the OT about offence, defence and special teams. Wind and weather could be factored in if you choose to have teams defend different ends, or could be taken out of the game by having teams defend the same end. A time clock could be added for each series to simulate the 3 minute warning and forcing some clock management but not so much that teams will be unable to run a balanced attack.

Penalties on converts – When the kicking team takes a penalty, moving the ball 5 yards or 10 yards back does not actually penalize the team for the infraction. When the defending team takes a penalty on a convert, they can be penalized by having the yardage applied on the subsequent kickoff. I would like to see the defending team have the option to apply yardage against the kicking team if the kicking team incurs a penalty on the convert.

Roughing the passer – I would like to see some discretion put back into the officials’ hands to enforce the penalty similar to the differentiation between roughing the kicker and contacting the kicker. I appreciate the idea of protecting the QBs with the impact that they have on the entertainment value of a game and the importance to their team, but there are too many times where an official has to penalize at 15 yards and an automatic first down regardless of whether the contact is largely harmless and incidental or whether it is malicious and delivered with intent. The differentiation is there for kickers as well as for Pass Interference, and I believe having the latitude regarding QBs would better the game and also perhaps stop QBs from baiting defenders with a late hook slide or turning up-field along the sidelines.

I think the problem with 2 5-minute halves is the time involved... and that's a VERY big deal to TSN. When teams start playing close to the vest it can take a loooooong time to play 10 minutes of football. Which, I believe, is why they changed to the shot-gun approach in the first place.

I understand that it IS a big deal, but I don't fully understand WHY it's a big deal. Seems to me, when you're running one of your higher rated broadcast ventures, you'd welcome the opportunity to hold those viewers a little bit longer before joining darts in progress. I understand that they need schedules and structure, but is there more to it from the broadcaster perspective?

I'd be curious to know what would be the net time difference in running a complete 4-possession OT under the current system and two five-minute halves under the old system. Parkies... wanna run some tape and time it?

Satellite time is very expensive and OT's can't be reliable scheduled... and when that can't be done, advertising can't be sold, so you end up with filler advertising who basically pay the same rate whether they're on during a highly rated football game, or poker at 5am.

I DO have a few games on disc prior to the 2000 change in overtime format, but almost all my discs are missing the commercials, so it's tough to really gauge how long they are.. still, I can give 'er a peek I guess!

In OT, QB's have to throw with their non-dominant hand!

I like the idea of moving them back to the 50...but I also like the idea of a timed possession....not a 5 minute half, but start each team from the 50 and give them one minute, maybe one and half. Each team still gets 2 possessions starting from the 50.

Also, I really like how the CFL is getting the fans involved. They aren't just having 'This Is Our League' as a simple slogan.
