    Joe Pao feelin' the heat

    'It's all on me:' Paopao
City must get a winner in '05

Renegades coach Joe Paopao says the CFL team has to produce a winner for Ottawa football fans in 2005. The team has suffered through three straight losing seasons. Amid rumblings of disturbingly slow ticket sales, the coach/GM of the Renegades yesterday declared 2005 a "must win" season.
"Winning sells, bottom line," Joe Paopao said at an off-season activity update for the local media 58 days before the start of training camp. "It's not good enough to play hard and be close. Those days have come and gone. This city deserves a winner. And it's going to get one."
Season ticket numbers were unavailable at the briefing, just as they have been whenever ownership has been asked the question this winter. The vague, standard response is "it's going good," despite constant rumours to the contrary.
Minus the presence of Brad Watters, who officially stepped down as team president yesterday, Paopao was left to answer questions about an ownership which is still unsettled after six months of negotiations.
"Some things just take time," said Paopao, who has led the team to four, seven and five-win seasons. "Training camp is around the corner and football is going to be here.
"(Winning) is a must. We've got to find a way to win. We haven't done anything in three years."
Asked if the existence of the franchise hinged on a successful season, Paopao said: "I don't have that answer. Obviously, you need people to go to the games.
"It's about what the owners can tolerate. Nobody wants to lose money. It's all on me, as the head coach. We've got to get out there and win. Winning answers all those questions."

SIGNINGS OF THE TIMES: The Renegades finally have themselves a fullback, after announcing that non-import Lloyd Orris has inked a deal with the team. Orris, a 5-foot-10, 200 pounder, is a former fifth round pick of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers who didn't play last season. He's also a Simon Fraser University product who blocked for former Renegade Mike Vilimek when the latter was a dominant college running back ... The club released four veterans yesterday: LB Reggie Givens and RB Raymonn Adams, plus two non-imports in LB Charles Assman and K Demetris Scouras ... The Renegades also added a pair of imports - DB Leonard Myers and D-lineman Michael "Cherokee" Moncrief.

BETWEEN THE LINES: The Renegades have an offer on the table for veteran OL Chris Burns, who became a free agent in February. Burns, a Renegade the past three years, is expected to wait until closer to training camp before deciding on where he'll play. "He's going to wait, but we have to move forward," said Paopao, who currently has eight Canadian O-linemen under contract and expects to bring two Americans to compete for protection jobs at camp .... The Renegades are unlikely to select RB Jesse Lumsden in the Canadian College draft even if he is still available when they make the second pick overall. "We need a guy who is going to come to camp now," said Paopao. "He's going to have an opportunity in the States, I believe." ... The Renegades are still negotiating for a training camp site, with the possibility they'll return to Kemptville, but only for a 10-12 day "mini-boot camp" before setting up shop at Frank Clair Stadium, Paopao said.

I was shocked he wasn't turfed after last year.....

If they don't make the playoffs, I don't know how bright the future will be for the Renegades .

If they keep Paopao around this long for losing seasons, what are they going to do to him when they have a winning one?

Move the Gades to Quebec City, this is twice in like 10 years they have been in shambles once folding, and now on the verge of folding.

This experiment should be over for a long time. It is embarassing

I agree, I'm not sure why it wasn't paopao getting canned at the end of last year instead of Tillman.

I feel for the fans in Ottawa, I lived there for a while, and they're good fans, but they got sick of supporting 4-14 teams year after year.

I was really happy when football came back to Ottawa, and when they got Tillman as their GM, I thought, good move. Then Tillman went and signed Joe, and I knew it was trouble. Reminded me a lot of when Rienbold signed paopao, and you knew the Bombers were in for losing seasons.

No offense, but Paopao just doesn't win. Look at his record as a coach, sure he may be a nice guy and all, but he doesn't coach winning teams.
If you were an Argo fan, what reason would you have for watching football?

I agree with GeeBrr! The lack of attendance tells me that the people in our nation's capitol don't want football. The team has already folded once, and has been barely afloat since it returned. Why should we keep trying to maintain a team in a city that doesn't want it? If the fans don't support the team this year, move it.

                  I don't know, really.

I mean, the Renegades play an exciting style of ball - trick plays and whatever all over the place...and a healthy KJ is a good QB, Ranek is a good RB, their receiving corps isn't bad, their D is not as good with Wiltshire gone though. A lot of the tools are there.

And they absolutely PASTED us in Ottawa last year - that's probably our worst defeat in the past three years (I might look that up later, don't ask me to now)...so they CAN win games when things go right.

I also think the ticket prices are way too high (I paid $55+ for row 30-ish on the 20 yd line two years ago)...so I think it's a combination of expensive tix, questionable management, and injuries to key players (contributing to losses) that are keeping away fans. I know I'd love to go to Renegade games if I lived in Ottawa, just because of their style. But maybe that's just me.

Re: Joe Pao feelin' the heat

In spite of everything, there is still a decent fan base in Ottawa. It's a shame that a solid owner hasn't come forward to rescue the 'Gades the way that the Ti-Cats and Argos have been rescued.

In defence of the fans, it's pretty damn hard to support a losing team year after year after year after year after year...
...especially when the ownership doesn't look like they are trying to compete.
IMO, Ottawa has a solid fan base. They just need to have a competitive team for a change.

GeeBrr's anti-Ottawa/Halifax, pro-Quebec City sentiments may sound ridiculous, but he makes very very valid points. QC is a sure fire, low risk move for the CFL.
I told those f***s down at the league office a thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!

I don't know if I would call it "sure fire", I mean, nothing in life is a guarantee.

That being said, I do think a team in Quebec City makes a lot of sense, they would become a natural rival to the Montreal Alouettes and the province of Quebec has proven to be a hotbed for football in Canada.

I think the gades just need to start to win games and make the playoffs, They have the fan base to be a viable CFL franchise. In my opinion their fans just need some encouragement i.e an ownership that actually appears to care about the onfield operations of the team. I like the idea of Quebec city getting a team as this would create a good eastern rivalry with Montreal, Also maybe Halifax should be considered for Atlantic Canada.
