fumbles *are* reviewable though are they not in the NFL? i know they are in the NCAA.... and if that fumble would have been reviewed then sask would have gained possesion and calgary wouldnt have scored one of their touchdowns

yes, the CFL has many, many more times the mistakes compared to the NFL.... the NFL simply doesnt have near as many mental mistakes in a game.... some of that is the better coaching, some of it is better athletes, some of it is the rules that we use that cause more mistakes..... but all of it equals out to a VERY VERY boring product in the NFL.... there are usually about 3-5 interesting plays/game in the NFL, its just not enough to keep me interested.... i would seriously almost rather watch baseball, and id rather watch golf than baseball, so thats saying something

the NFL is one of, if not *the*, most boirng sports league i have ever had the misfortune to watch

Fumbles are only reviewable if the whistle wasn't blown. IE: the reynolds fumble could not have been reviewed because the official blew it dead. The French non-fumble (knee was down) could have been reviewed because there was no-whistle. This has lead to, in the NFL, the refs putting the whisltes in their pockets and letting the plays just go till their natural conclusion and then using replay to sort it out. And look how THAT turned out for the Saints this weekend...

I agree with this. I have a buddy who moved to Edmonton from St. Louis about a year ago. He's a huge Rams fan. He's been to a couple Esks games this year. He says he has trouble getting into the CFL, not because of the officiating, but because of the amount of mistakes that are consistently made by the players. Too many turnovers, too many stupid penalties, too many mental errors.

I thought that was an interesting point of view. And the more I watch the NFL versus the CFL and the more I think of it, the more I agree.

Good point. The CFL is sometimes viewed as one grade below the best which is the NFL and that is why there are so many player mistakes made.

Here is another issue to contemplate regarding the officiating. If we try grading, or creating a "perform or your fired" style of judging, how long would it take before there were no officials left? What I'm saying is, we do not have the ranks, or the developemental system that the NFL has. It would not take long for the officials report cards to become useless. Without qualified replacement officials, you cannot "let go" of the officials you have. Therefore why even grade them? It would only create issues, and go no further. Sort of a "Yah, I sucked, what can you do about it?" state.
IMO the grass roots officiating needs as much assistance as grass roots player developement.

First off........there is no reason to assume that we adopt the same instant replay system as they have in the NFL. Theirs works because of their own rules (3 TO's per half & continuous clock, etc).....

Perhaps the quickest and simplest solution would be a an off-field official in the booth to do a review much the way the NHL does....it could be done either at the request of the on-field officials, a coach's challenge, or a radio down from the booth to the on-field officials for a stoppage. The exact details would need to be worked out, but perhaps this is where they should start.....

I agree that there needs to be a more effective "farm team" system of refs to replenish the stock in the CFL presently. Inconsistencies will still be part of the game, but I think that we all agree that there has to be more accountability for the calls that are made. Whether it's a matter of refs losing jobs or what have you, new standards will take time to fix this problem (including instant replay). And let's not be so quick to call soccer boring. Top flight soccer IS exciting, especially European soccer, IMO - Serie A, Spain's Liga, the EPL, World Cup... exciting stuff, highly skilled, just can't stand some of the whining divas who seem to explode when bumped by a defender. Sort of like Burris after the Benefield incident...

Yeah, CFL officiating is bad. Live with it. The standings wouldn't be any different if the refs were a bit better.

Why should I have to live with bad refs. A bad NFL ref is better than the best CFL clown ref.

Its not about the standings!!! The refs I think feel they have to be part of the game. I don't think there is any difference this year. At least in the NFL they will come out and say yea we blow that call.

I think the refs should be fined for bad calls.

CFL refs make WWE refs look good.

I think at the very least a grading system would keep the bums out of playoff games, where things really count. Certainlly changes need to be made, and we as fans know you the dregs of the officiating crews are, but getting rid of these guys is step 197 on 250 when we're on step 15.
