    Bombers sign Ron Warner . . .

    Some info on Warner . . .

    http://www.kusports.com/football/nfl/warner.html

He's big enough by CFL standards to play tackle. This could be the end of Joe Fleming. Regardless, the line is good as it is. One of the few non question marks on the Bombers. But a little healthy competition at camp won't hurt anyone. They can be pushed to be better.

Good signing! He was one of my favourite players in 2000!

Well there you go. That's why I don't know who he is. He played for a bunch of crap teams. (Washington, Chicago, New Orleans, Winnipeg. )

hopefully he can show up and play for you guys.

Always be wary of the paper tiger, but if he gets the nod over Fleming, then any trade will also help your ball club.

That said, IMO D-Line was not your weak point last year, you guys really need some secondary help now......

Good post. Yeah D-line is one of our only non question marks. But it's a solid signing. And will atleast make camp more interesting.

We do need a little help, but not as much as one might think from outside.

Fish, if our secondary sucked I would tell you there is no talent back there and they sucked, much like I will tell you our LBs sucked last year, and still could use some help but have taken a monster step.

Fact is there is talent in our secondary, Will Fields had teams afraid to throw to his side for the first part of the season till Rust left, Omar Evans played at an all star level, Anthony Malbrough is one of the best cover guys in the league...those are the mainstays as of right now.

Stanford Samuels showed flashes last year of great play, including a great game against the Esks at Commenwealth, Ike Charlton is a former NFLer who is going to make a huge impact for us this year, he was very good in his brief time last year, Santino Hall, and Brad Franklin are options as well...Franklin is better on the corner if you ask me, we tried to make him a HB. But there is talent, and coaching was a HUGE factor last year...losing your coordinator is huge, and playing the kind of ***** idiot system Daley did was awful...I expect a big turn around...but I can see why other teams fans don't.

That being said, there isn't anything appealing through free agency, and I am sure Taman will bring in some more guys for camp so I am not to worried at this point.

I can understand your optimism, but the fact is last year...despite any raw talent you saw that secondary was pretty much brutal as a unit. You can have some individual talent yes, but if they can't play together then they won't progress as a group. The good news is they can only get better.

I could see Franklin as a wide side corner as well, IMO his cover skills still need plenty of work, but he has great make up speed and closes on the ball extremely well. You know that I thought he would have stayed here last season, so you know I think he's got the parts to play in this league. As for the rest, both Omar and Fields had decent individual years last year in spurts, but neither worry me too much over all. They'll need to play consitant as a group all year before they truley become effective.

I have to agree with FIshman. Until I see results on the field I am not going to comment on this team. We still have tons of question marks.

                          WBB RELEASE – 2006/044

                          FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 7, 2006

WINNIPEG, MB – An area of strength for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is about to get a whole lot stronger with today’s signing of defensive end Ron Warner.

This is Warner’s second stint with the Blue Bombers. Warner (6-3, 275, Kansas ’98 DOB: Sept. 26, 1975 in Independence, Kansas) originally signed with the Blue & Gold just prior to training camp in 2000. He recorded six quarterback sacks, 19 defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, two tackles for losses and one pass knockdown in just nine games that season.

“We believe the addition of Ron Warner will strengthen an already talented group on the defensive line,” said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman.

“As he has shown throughout his career, Ron has the ability to get to the quarterback and disrupt what opposing offences are trying to do. Adding Ron will make the defensive line a very interesting group to watch in training camp.”

In 2004, Warner played in 14 games with the NFL’s Washington Redskins. He registered nine defensive tackles, 3.5 quarterback sacks, one pass knockdown and one interception that he returned 39 yards. Warner was also a member of the Redskins in 2003, appearing in five games and recording five tackles after signing as an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 2, 2003. He was released by the Redskins just prior to the 2005 season.

Prior to joining Washington, Warner spent one season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002. He appeared in four games with Tampa Bay, where he appeared in four games and was a solid contributor on special teams. He spent all of 2001 on the Bucs’ practice roster.

Warner was signed by the Chicago Bears on Dec. 22, 1999 and spent time on the team’s practice roster. He was released the following month and signed with the Bombers later that year.

The Kansas native began his pro career in 1998 with the New Orleans Saints after being selected in the seventh round (239th overall) of that year’s NFL Draft. A pre-season knee injury limited him to just one game that season. He garnered four tackles in the Saints season finale against the Buffalo Bills. He attended training camp with the Saints in 1999 and also spent time on the practice rosters of the Washington Redskins and Chicago Bears that season.

Warner was a collegiate standout with the University of Kansas. In just two seasons he became the school’s all-time sack leader with 20.5 sacks. Warner was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference pick, the first Kansas linebacker to earn all-conference honours since 1995. He set a school record in his senior season with 14.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for losses.

Didn't Franklin lead the team in tackles during the pre-season last year? I thought he would crack the line up to be honest. I guess that shows how much I know...

Franklin isn't bad, he isn't a half IMO which is were Daley the genius wanted him, but he can be good on the corner...getting a little up there in age, but not bad depth.
