    Assessment - Wide Receivers

The Esks still have a potent group of receivers but age is catching up to more than one of them. I honestly think that a couple of them are not set up to be as good as they can because of our offensive gameplan.

Robert Leblanc - If he is going to make a push to be more than a backup it will have to be at this years camp. Looked very good in his 1st camp 2 years ago, not as good last year.

Andrew Nowacki - Projected to be an excellent starting receiver when he came on the scene a couple years back. Has been okay but has not taken the next step. Will be back next year fighting for that 5th receiver spot.

Mookie Mitchell - Still gets results and Ray likes throwing to him. His age and salary might catch up to him but I think he is one of the few WR's on the team that seems to have plays designed to suit his skills.

Toby Ziegler - Has a year under his belt, I think he will have to make the team next year on the strength of kick returns rather than his receiving ability.

Tony Tompkins - By far the most disappointing player on the team this year for me. Others disagree obviously. For the number of times he got his hands on the ball his terrible returns outnumbered his good ones. I believe he is free to try the NFL this year and if so he'll be gone at least for the start of the year.

J.F. Romeo - A pleasant surprise at camp. He is essentially a clone of Leblanc and Nowacki. Three canadian receivers all with similar builds and abilites. Not starting material but perhaps backup and special teams.

Richard Alston - Has looked not bad when he's been in at receiver but will have to improve to be seen as starter material next year. Did not look that great in the return game last week.

Trevor Gaylor - Gonzo alonzo is what I am betting. Has looked really good at times and not great at other times. Being sat out so much at the end of the year indicates to me he is not in our plans for next year.

Pat Woodcock - Continues to be a frusterating player for me. Plays just good enough to look like he should for sure be a bigger part of the team, then he flat out drops one in his bread basket. There is nothing that bugs me more in a receiver than not having consistently decent hands. He will be back next year and will start probably as he did come on near the end of this year.

Jason Tucker - Our best receiver by alot, however he could be right up there with Geroy Simon as the best in the league if our offensive game plan had a clue as how to get him the ball even if the other team is trying to double him. He is a must have player for our team, if he ever goes out we are in huge trouble.

Ed Hervey - Tough to know what to think about Hervey. He's a very polished receiver that has good hands. They have gone deep to him more near the end of the year but it's a question mark whether he is still a true deep threat. Another receiver that suffers from having only 3 plays drawn up for him it seems. He's a good team guy and should be back next year unless something weird happens.

Our WR group is very good but needs an infusion of import youth. I am really hoping that Paul jones finds someone for camp next year that forces his way onto the roster and makes the coaches keep him over a vet. That has not happened the last few years.

Can I drive Ed ,Trevor and Tony to the bus station now? Young canucks didn't really impress so we just have to clone Jason and Mookie afew times over. Alston is a keeper.... just watch!

Robert Leblanc - If he is going to make a push to be more than a backup it will have to be at this years camp. Looked very good in his 1st camp 2 years ago, not as good last year.
Rob seems to be a well liked guy within the room, but the jury is still out on weather he can take his game to the next level. Methinks that with his high paying offseason job, that his hunger to push himself on the field isn't what it should be. Definitely on the bubble.

Andrew Nowacki - Projected to be an excellent starting receiver when he came on the scene a couple years back. Has been okay but has not taken the next step. Will be back next year fighting for that 5th receiver spot.
Has been a bit banged up over the past two seasons but IMO he has the most upside of all our NI receivers.

Mookie Mitchell - Still gets results and Ray likes throwing to him. His age and salary might catch up to him but I think he is one of the few WR's on the team that seems to have plays designed to suit his skills.
It's time for an upgrade here, and finding the right guy is crucial to the long term success for Ray and Tucker. Ray is a slotback first type QB and lately Mookie hasn't shown he can get in behind guys like he used to, nor can he beat guys on YAC situations. I spoke with former Esk Craig Ellis last week and in his opinion the slot receiver spot is the most difficult to learn in the CFL because you can't just be athletic, you have to think and understand the game very well.

Toby Ziegler - Has a year under his belt, I think he will have to make the team next year on the strength of kick returns rather than his receiving ability.
Haven't seen much of him yet, but IMO he'll be here next year.

Tony Tompkins - By far the most disappointing player on the team this year for me. Others disagree obviously. For the number of times he got his hands on the ball his terrible returns outnumbered his good ones. I believe he is free to try the NFL this year and if so he'll be gone at least for the start of the year.
Tony played like he was scared of getting hurt. I think his focus was/is on staying healthy to get his NFL shot. While his blocking hasn't helped, TNT this year has been a pop cap by doing poor fundemental things like continually letting the ball hit the ground. Return guys are more plentiful than running backs......

J.F. Romeo - A pleasant surprise at camp. He is essentially a clone of Leblanc and Nowacki. Three canadian receivers all with similar builds and abilites. Not starting material but perhaps backup and special teams.
        Not good enough.

Richard Alston - Has looked not bad when he's been in at receiver but will have to improve to be seen as starter material next year. Did not look that great in the return game last week.
Could have the inside job on the slot receiver spot next year. Hopefully he's absorbed a lot of knowledge from the guys around him to learn the game.

Trevor Gaylor - Gonzo alonzo is what I am betting. Has looked really good at times and not great at other times. Being sat out so much at the end of the year indicates to me he is not in our plans for next year.
Gaylor will be fighting for a job next year and rightly so.

Salary cap purge perhaps? Underwhelmed most of the year.

Jason Tucker - Our best receiver by alot, however he could be right up there with Geroy Simon as the best in the league if our offensive game plan had a clue as how to get him the ball even if the other team is trying to double him. He is a must have player for our team, if he ever goes out we are in huge trouble.
Stone cold lock for next year.

A new OC will definitely help Ed's case. I mean it can't get any worse right? On film, Ed's been open all year and the coaches have seen this, recognized it, and still won't get him the ball on mid and deep routes. If we're not even trying to stretch the defence then it doesn't matter who plays that spot. Other DB's still give him HUGE cushions off the line and if he didn't have the ability to run past guys you would see press coverage on him and you rarely do. Ed also is a huge influence in the locker room and is one of those vets who understands what it means to be an eskimo and who accepts his responsibility in passing that knowlege to the next generation. Huge mistake to let him go.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

          Great summary Diez!!

I wonder if using Goldie as a slotback now and then would work? Dunno if he really has the hands for it, but he could be a 'Haskins-type' player. And frankly, I'd rather see Goldie in a regular rotation than Tompkins.

          - "Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem..."
          - "A mild instance of turf toe (grade 1) can be merely aggravating while a serious case (grade 3) can be debilitating."

I am with you...!! I want Goldies' enthusiasm and emotion on offense and if he can be converted to a SB, then I think it is worth trying!

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

Main problem is we don't have any tough YAC receivers. The Canadians as a group do not stand out as well. Other than Woodcock we have no burners in that group. The only weapon teams fear is Tucker which is not enough.

I'd love to get a Tony Simmons or Derek Armstrong type to augment the attack. Maybe we can get Marc Boreighter (sp)?

No. We don't need that old, washed up, injury prone, piece of garbage.

I love the guy, but honestly, I'd be a little disappointed if he were back. If only because it means we're not getting younger at the position.

Could have drafted Fantuz but Braidwood was better. Maybe this year we can draft a big NI receiver. Dubuc hasn't fulfilled that role.
