You can replace the athelete but...

Can this team replace the leadership void that suddenly exists with the departure of Mobes, Brady and perhaps some other big names in the short term and regain a hold of a playoff berth in the process?

Does Ricky ray step outside his general quiet demenaor and grab hold of this team in an increased leadership role?

Are guys like McGrath and LaRose ready to step it up leadership wise?

Is Braidwood concerned more with bettering himself towards an NFL shot or learning what it takes to be a real Eskimo?

AJ Gass and Robert Brown right now stand out as the only 'Eskimos' right now on the defence, does that worry anyone else?

I'd love to see Ray step up and be a leader. I've always wondered what he would be like if he freaked out and just got pissed off once in awhile.

Doesn't Bother me one bit.. I have faith that someone or ones will step up and become the leader(s).

you could say it was time for a "changing of the guard" , and we must hope those who are waiting in the weeds are ready to step up

Ray is not much of a leader, I'm afraid. He leads by example, but is quite a quite passive individual unlike Maas.

I believe Bradley, Bertrand, Maurer, Dalton, Comiskey will end up picking up where mobes and donny have left. You can never replace what those guys bring to the table, but at some point in time, there has to be a changing of the guard in order to continue the success of the past. Unfortunately it comes at the expense of some great Eskimos. One thing I do know, this organization has gone through the loss of great Eskimos in the past, and they will get through this, and if everything works out the way it should, we'll be better for it.

I think this was the biggest mistake of DMs career. You need more than four leaders on the field.

And I agree with most of these posts, as much as I love RR he is too quiet to lead.

That's the unfortunate thing about sports. Great players age and lose their abilities and if we are lucky the transition is seamless but it seldom is.

This was more about competing against the salary cap than anything else.

Exactly, too many people are confused about the cap.

As far as I am concerned there was a way to work around this.

Montreal was smart enough to re-work 20 contracts before the Grey Cup. Why did we re-work so few? Which has been reported as from 6 to 12 contracts on a team with a roster of 39 players plus or minus a few.

They offered re-structuring deals to those they wanted.

Re: You can replace the athelete but...

IMHO, I think we need to look at the top of the ladder to highlight the questionable leadership in this organization. I think it became really evident last year with the outrage people were expressing at Hughie's hands-off approach to all things EE. A strong leader makes a tough decision and people can do more than live with it. What I'm sensing is that people don't trust DM's decision-making. I think most of us "believe" that there's good sense behind the release of veteran players with strong leadership roles, but I don't know if there's a lot of "faith" in the leadership.

Will someone step up to fill this void? I sure think so. But leadership has to be improved at all levels of this organization, not just one or two players. Personally, I like Kouzes & Posner's four aspects of leadership, and I think DM could do a better job (and it'd make more leaders!).
                      1. Challenge the Process (this trade "may" be a step in that direction ... yet to be seen)
                      2. Inspire a Shared Vision (what's the plan, DM? And why should we buy it?)
                      3. EMPOWER Others! (let players become the leaders they can be)
                      4. Model the Way (live the EE way!)

p.s. I don't subscribe to the "you have to be a vocal/emotional leader" to be effective school of thought. I'd follow Ricky Ray to the promised land!

I don't disagree with much of what you said. But without vocal leaders who share the same end result desired, you get what the Oilers have this year. a bunch of guys who are unwilling to say when the system is a bit messed up and challenge things not for selfish sakes but to better the organization. My biggest concern is that we might be replacing valuable veterans with guys who want to get some film for an NFL shot and care nothing about what it is to wear green and gold.

Montreal was on the eve of playing in the Grey Cup while we were last in the West and out of the playoffs. No big surprise that they would extend more guys than we did...they probably wanted to keep more guys than we did. There were maybe 10 guys on last years Eskimo team that you could guarantee wouldn't lose their spots if outperformed in camp this year (a far cry from the early to mid 90s when almost every starting job was spoken for before camp started).

This wasn't as big of a cap move as most would think. If Mobes was 27-32 he wouldn't be cut. He's moving into his mid 30's and it was obvious he had lost a step. Our defence was one of the worst tackling team I have ever seen last year, if Mobes was still as good as alot of you assume he is he would've led the CFL in tackles. I thought we would keep him around for 1 more year but I guess they want youth at LB now, which is a good idea IMO because our LB's need to improve.
