Esks acquire Ron Warner from Bombers

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced today they have acquired import defensive end Ron Warner and a 4th round draft pick in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft from Winnipeg in exchange for DB Jason Nugent and a 5th round draft pick in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft.

A two-year CFL vet, Warner played in 18 games for the Bombers in 2006, racking up 28 defensive tackles, six quarterback sacks and a team-leading seven tackles for a loss. He also played in the East Semi-Final recording three defensive tackles and a tackle for a loss. He made his CFL debut in 2000 with the Bombers, recording 19 defensive tackles, six quarterback sacks, one special teams tackle, two tackles for losses and one pass knockdown in just nine games. Danny Maciocia, Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations, says “We’re very excited to add a player of Ron’s quality. He brings a high energy, physical presence to our defence.”

A stand-out at the University of Kansas, Warner became the school’s all-time sack leader with 20.5 sacks. He also set school records his senior year with 14.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for losses. Selected in the 7th round (239th overall) in the 1998 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, Warner spent time in the NFL with New Orleans (1998), Chicago (1999), Tampa Bay (2001-2002) and Washington (2003-2004).

Nugent was drafted by the Eskimos in the second round (17th overall) in the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft. He sat out almost the entire season with an injury. He dressed for one game on September 16 at Hamilton.

I really wanted to see what Nuge could do..people thought he could be moved up to LB, but i guess with our recent influx of DBs he became expendable..

Warner had a good year two seasons ago but if I am not mistaken was much less effective last year. Pretty surprised they gave up on Nugent so fast, especially since he was heralded as one of the very best players in last years draft and fell due to his injury. If Warner plays up to his ability he should help out.

pros - Warner was very good for the Bombers last year and should shore up one side of the defensive line, with Guillory likely acting as a depth/rotation guy with Warner and Braidwood drawing the starting assignments at end. We should be able to attack from the edges in any situation. If that draws double teams to the outside, it should make things easier for our DT's to get consistant push. *That is if he is actually used at end, it seems the Bombers employed him mainly as a tackle last year. If he can play either inside or out it adds flexibility to our roster along the D-Line as well.

cons - we lost a young NI that we were very high on. Warner is 32. So this looks like a move to help the short term, but if Nugent is the player we thought he was when we drafted him, we could lose this deal in 2 years. Warner was also the guy who went to the arena league, retired from the Bombers, changed his mind, and then came back to them all in this offseason...

actually, although the article lists Warner as a DE, he lined up at the tackle spot for the Bombers, and would likely do so here as well. Expect to see Guillory and Braidwood on the ends. Warner with Brown in the middle would be very powerful. This is excellent trade IMO - we were looking questionable in the middle for the front4 having lost Charbs and Spencer being as questinable as ever. Certainly Warner is a temp solution at age 32, but this trade will prevent any dropoff while we continue looking for a young stud to extablish himself at DT. As much as I was looking forward to Nugent this year, I can understand having to give up something good. Recent action suggests the Esks are planning to go with a totally american LB corp again, so Nugent would likely have been relegated to backup safety and ST duty.

overall: I'm comfortable with this, but not an "OMG!! WTF!! THATS AWESOME!!" kind of trade

We needed help on the Dline but we still need some NI help there IMO

yeah I hear ya Dies - I'm holding out hope for Bekasiak with #2 draft

speaking of draft, just realized the draft exchange in this trade... we got Warner AND moved up a bit? apparently Nugent vs Warner straight up is Nugent > Warner .. interesting... might be slightly attributed to Winnipeg being a little extra eager to move him after the shenanigans with the AFL

                          Re: NEW DE

Warner played well for the bombers last year, but there were some questions about him. 4 of his sacks came in one game against the argos, and he really tailed off as the season went on. There were some rumours about him playing hurt most of the season but noone really knows. As for him being traded, well he burnt bridges with all this arena league nonsense and it was pretty much expected that Taman didn't want him around anymore and that he didn't want to be in Winnipeg anymore.

                            I don't like this trade...............
We give up youth, Canadian content, and the fact he is a Canadian at a traditional Import position.
                            Nope.............not at all.
