Did the Esks come out tops from the 2003 draft

If I remember correctly, we gave up Ralph Staten and Darren Davis neither of whom would have played another down for us to aquire the extra picks, we also gave up next years 2nd rounder, and at this point, with a few breaks that are quite probable, we will have the following to show for it . .

    Joe McGrath
    Deitan Dubuc
    Randy Spencer
    Brock Ralph
    Matthieu Bertrand
    Patrick Kabongo

All this for Darren Davis, Ralph Staten and an up comming 2nd rounder.

This could very likely be 3 starters (McGrath, Dubuc/Bertrand, Ralph) a solid platoon player (Spencer - led the team in sacks) a project with some exciting potential (Kabongo 315 pound starter at Nebraska) and some terrific special teams help in Dubuc and Bertrand.

    Interesting analysis.

    Bertrand wasn't drafted though....free agent

Staten and Davis did play more football.

Staten and Davis didn't play much after that, brief stints in Ottawa.

Davis is another possibility for our RB position. That guy can play.

          ...or Michael Jenkins.

            Kabongo is garbage.

Bertrand is a hard worker and will have a long career if he can avoid injuries. He truly is a qb trying to play football and it leaves him bleeding and gasping for air at times. I have a feeling he'll figure the sh*& out soon enough. I like his motor.

Spencer is legit. He has many years ahead of him as a solid starter.

Brock is talented. Incredible speed and good hands. The only knock and it is kind of a big one is that he needs to get more physical (read: heart).

Dubuc- tough call, will he ever end up here is my question. Might end up being a decent fullback if he ever does.

Mc Grath needs to work on his run blocking. He is like a little kid in a man's body. Plenty of upside. Needs to mature and he will as time goes by.. Great feet and good solid pass blocking technique. Needs to develop a nasty streak to get to the next level.

We swapped picks with Calgary to get Dubuc, Radein was picked in between the pick traded and our spot. We stole McGrath off Calgarys practice roster so that has nothing to do with our draft that year. We gave up next years 1st and 2nd rounder to get Wayne and Kabongo, two D-lineman in an area we did not need two Canadians since we had Spencer and Charbonneau. Bertrand was a free agent and although he came along way from camp neither he nor Lezi played well enough for us think of them as the answer at FB. I said from the day we made the deal that the Kabongo/Wayne trade was suspect.

Thats what i was thinking. depending on what Darren has been doing, he may not be a bad option to bring in to camp.

I admire the way he's gone about things as well. He'll only get better.

I think we all agree that Brock took a pretty big step from where he was a year ago. Let's hope he keeps stepping forward.

Dubuc- tough call, will he ever end up here is my question.

The nasty streak will come with experience and once the game starts slowing down for him and he feels more comfortable. Huge upside with this kid.

We should see if we can set up a race with Terry Jones between the two.
