What if Maas were to return?

There is definitely talk of it. Either via a trade or a release. But the trade route is most likely. Mass would love it. And if we do it soon we can put some heat on Toronto, who is now chasing Montreal. This trade couldn't hurt Montreal, but it has the potential to hurt Toronto for at least two points.

Can you imagine the whining that would occur if Montreal did trade Mass to us? It would be "Ala Troy Davis" all over again. I'd love it.

This is what I feel the Esks should do. Throw some money Montreals way in the trade. We have plenty of money, it won't hurt the cap. Make it a cash deal. Look at the money we are saving due to the stupid cap, put some good use to it and send it to Montreal. It could be the Gretzky Deal Part Deux.

If Danny pulls this off I'll disband the "I hate DM" fan club and I'll ensure his stay in Edmonton (but not as Head Coach). This is what I see as the only answer for success.

I say repeat 2005, make the trade (Davis like), see Mass lead us to the Grey Cup, but this time win it on his very own.

Pony up the cash Eskimos, someone send DM and RL this post. They need my mind. Heck, throw Gaylor into the deal.

Can one of the mods move this to the Esks column? My mistake.

I would be pissed off. No need for him as a player.

He still has it; in the three games he played us in relief he orchestrated quick TD strikes. He was ruined in Hamilton, the atmosphere in Hamilton is awful there. And Montreal’s intentions were only to have him as insurance. They had no intentions of playing him.

This suggestion is better than some I have heard. Greene or Crandall, no way! At least Mass is in game shape and he is familiar with players such as Tuck and Gaylor.

And I expect Mass to retire after this season and become part of the Eskimo coaching staff. So this wouldn’t hurt anything in the future of our organization, in fact it would bolster it.

Even if we were to pick up Maas now, he probably wouldn't be effective. It took Ray and the rest of the Esks half a season to adapt to JC's offence, so what are the odds that a brand new quarterback could learn the entire offence in such a short amount of time and win games?

I'd love to have Maas back.. but I would perfer if he wasd to back up Lefors.. I would see him as an insurance policy incase our younger guys can't get it done...

Most intelligent post on Maas I've heard. It's not easy just to bring him back for 5 games and the effect would be minimal.

What is the trade deadline any more in the CFL. I know that they moved it up because of the Davis thing, but I am not sure where they moved it to.

As for Maas coming in, I would see what happens with what we have here before we go and make a move. LeFors could be the next Buck Pierce, you really never know until he has a full week with the #1 O. If they have to make a move quick then Maas would be good choice and could probably get him for a song with AC back in Montreal.

I'd have to agree, if we could get him, bring him in to round out our numbers of QB's and function as an additional coach (since there is no way he could pick up the offense in so short a time..).

It actually could hurt Montreal quite a bit. We are one point behind them for the cross-over as well. I highly doubt they would want to have any hand in helping us at this point in the season.

Anyways, as others mentioned. I doubt he would be effective right away. This is a new offense, and would take some time to get used to. I'd rather see what Lefors has with a week of practice before I write him off...

So who do we cut to get Maas's huge salary in the books? Tell me that 1st of all, then tell me which of LeFors or Jyles we cut next year. In case you guys haven't watched the last 2 years Maas is not the same QB as he once was.

Visions of sugar plums are dancing in peoples heads here.

I was wondering about salary as well. Now that RR is hurt, are they still on the hook for his salary for the rest of the year? If not, then they have no money issues at all as he is one of the highest payed players in the cfl. I'm saying this not for signing Maas, but maybe finding some other high caliber talent to bring in in other positions.

His salary counts against the cap unless we put him on the nine-game list. If we do that, he's done for the season and any POs we see. They won't put him on the nine-game IR if there is any chance he can return.

Why would people be pissed about this? There would be no whinning, the guy is not the same QB he was 2 years ago, and it makes sense that the Esks will be looking to bolster the QB position. I think Maas has football left in him, and a return to Edmonton will probably turn any confidence issues he may have around, but if the Esks make this trade it would not be a major coup, in fact I expect them to try, and I expect Montreal to accomodate, as they can get more for Maas from the Esks right now than they could in the offseason.

It would be exactly like the Hamilton trades. There would be virtually no whining at all....until the Esks happened to get hot and get to the cup, then the whinning would be incessant just like the hamilton deals.
