Head Coach Candidates - update Dec. 1st.

    Report: Eskimos eyeing Buratto

    TSN.ca Staff

    12/1/2004

The Team 1040 in Vancouver is reporting that the Edmonton Eskimos have interviewed Joe Paopao, Steve Buratto, Marcel Bellefeuille, Richie Halll and Kent Austin for their head coaching position.

The radio station reports that Buratto is the leading candidate to land the job. Buratto is currently the offensive coordinator for the B.C. Lions. He has previous head-coaching experience with the Lions and Calgary Stampeders.

Paopao, who has coached the Ottawa Renegades since their inception, confirmed to the station that he talked with the Eskimos. Paopao has been given permission by Renegades president Brad Watters to talk with other teams about employment.

Bellefeuille and Hall are the offensive and defensive coordinators with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, while Austin is the offensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts.

From this report I just want someone to 'wake me up' and tell me that it is just a bad dream!! The two guys who were supposed to be 'front runners' are not even on the list! (*shudder*)

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

      What the hell?

I don't see why they would go with anyone on this list ahead of Stubler or Marshall.

        More from sportsnet:

        Leaving the Lions den
        by Marty York, Sportsnet.ca
He was in charge of the Canadian Football League's most productive and highest-scoring offence during the past season, but that wasn't enough for Steve Buratto to keep his job as offensive co-ordinator of the B.C. Lions.

Sources have told Rogers Sportsnet that the Lions will announce shortly that Buratto, in a stunning development, has left the Lions because it became clear that he could not get along with the team's other offensive coaches, Dan Dorazio and Jacques Chapdelaine.

"The fairest way to describe what happened to Steve would be to say that he and the Lions reached a mutual agreement that it would be best if he left," a source said. "That may not be the most spectacular thing to say, but it's certainly the most truthful."

Chapdelaine, a former CFL receiver, likely will take over as offensive co-ordinator.

But Sportsnet also has learned that Buratto is not likely to be out of the CFL's coaching ranks for long.

Sources say Buratto, even before the announcement of his departure in B.C., is by far the leading candidate to succeed Tom Higgins as the new head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos. They say Edmonton boss Hugh Campbell already has made inquiries about Buratto and that the announcement of his hiring could be made within a week.

Buratto has head-coaching experience with both B.C. and Calgary and that, combined with his success in B.C. this year, places him head-and-shoulders above the other candidates.

Adam Rita, by the way, was pursued by the Eskimos but the general manager of the Toronto Argonauts told Campbell that he is not interested in leaving his position with the Grey Cup champions.

Both of the Argos' co-ordinators, however, are interested in the Edmonton job, and both offensive co-ordinator Kent Austin and defensive co-ordinator Rich Stubler have been interviewed by Campbell. So has Calgary defensive co-ordinator Denny Creehan, and both Saskatchewan co-ordinators -- Marcel Bellefeuille (offence) and Richie Hall (defence).

Another possibility for the Eskimos could be Joe Paopao, who also has been interviewed by Campbell, and is in a state of limbo as head coach of the Renegades while the Ottawa ownership mess gets straightened out.

In Saskatchewan, meanwhile, Roy Shivers will remain the Roughriders' general manager but Danny Barrett has told the club he is not sure if he'd like to return as head coach.

His contract is expiring, and sources say he has told the Riders he is thinking of looking into the possibility of becoming a coach in the National Football League or at the U.S. college level.

I would hope that if DB is out of regina, that Richie Hall is his replacement.

I sure hope the Sportsnet article has more complete info than TSN. I agree with Angelus, I can't see how any of those TSN mentioned would be preferable to Stubler or Creehan.

This is still all speculation......what has been honestly reported more than once was that Hughie would perform a comprehensive search for a new HC and I think there is much to say in that neither Marshall or Maciocia were mentioned in either article. I'm sure that this is nothing more than preliminary contact and the real contenders for the position will likely have a second or possibly a third interview in person rather than over the phone. I doubt we'll see anything happen this week, but hopefully someone will be in place before Christmas.

*Remember folks, one of these articles is written my Marty York......so take it with a liberal amount of salt......

like I said.......these are all initial talks......a feeling out if you will......there are likely hundreds of guys who could coach, but the trick is getting the right one.....just because you beat a lot of bushes, doesn't mean you have to grab the first critter that jumps out......

I do not like any of those candidates. If we get PaoPao, Burratto or Austin I'll barf. I don't mind Hall but think our two assistants are just as good.

I had Burratto as a dark horse. You have to take into account a few things in order to think of that possibility. I'd bet a very expesive cup of coffee that Maciocia and marshall were both asked how they would feel if they didn't get the job? Now let's SPECULATE and say the Maciocia indicates that he would seek a head job elsewhere and Marshall would like to stay with the organization. That could give Burratto an advantage in briging in an offensive mind while hurting BC.

I'm not saying that's how it will go down but I could see that type of scenario.
I will not, for a moment longer, support an organization who chooses to cowardly kneel where they once fiercely & proudly stood

I'm not surprised to hear that Hughie is talking to alot of different people. It only makes sense to consider alot of people-as long as he hires the right one.

Burratto did not impress me at all when he was the head coach of the Lions. Sure he looks good as an assistant coach but he did not look good as the head guy in my mind, at least not near the end of his tenure.

Re: Head Coach Candidates - update Dec. 1st.

First off TSN, York and the Radio Station are all obviously getting their info from the same source. Yet if TSN and the radio station don't use the word 'source' it's o.k. Heck, that reeks even more of rumour mongering.

Any-hoo... What's significant is that three 'competing' Sports networks are breaking the same story. That means there is substance to it.

What it doesn't mean is that Burratto WILL BE the next Esks' coach. It just means that he is being considered. And that discussions are likely heating up. Burratto could end up in Ottawa. To be honest I prefer knowing that Hugh is looking at all options, not just laser-focused on one or two people.

Here's another angle for you... Hughie knows how to play the media game better than most people here understand. That's not a slight against anyone, just a fact. It could well be that Hughie has indeed talked to Burratto and orchestrated a leak of the info. Why? There may be more going on behind the scenes and this is Hugh's way of forcing someone's hand. By feigning interest in Burratto he may get another candidate to show his cards. Or a lead candidate has made a stance and this is Hugh's way of saying 'your not the only tool in the shed'. Bottom line is that you are right when you say 'only speculation'.

so... if Burratto is the next Esks' coach... does that make Marty right? or just his sources? And, if Burratto isn't in the Esks' plans, does that mean that the reporting of both TSN and the radio station are equally suspect? Logic would dictate that you would have to say that, wouldn't it? Or at the very least treat them with a little more 'salt'. ;-)
