    Sept. 27 Post Game Notes

I didn't see an actual post game thread, just a bunch of garbage threads about firing and cutting people, so I'll give my analysis.

QBs - Ray doesn't look 100%, but he's getting there. A good performance by him, but he's still checking down too much. Maybe he doesn't trust his receivers enough yet. Who knows, but I'm happy that he is returning to form. I expect to be 100% for next week.

RB - Goldie should not be in there. He's adequate, but should not be our main guy. McCarty is a quality starter, give him the rock already. The only conclusion to be made here is that DM thought that his decision to start Goldie last week was the correct decision. It wasn't then, it wasn't today.

WR - I like what I saw. Mann and Prator were solid. I don't know about the rest of you, but I saw a little 81 in Prator. Just a hint, but there nonetheless. Need to get the ball to Stamps more, the guy works hard. I can't see downfield, but I did attend a couple games last season and noticed that Stamps got lazy with his patterns at times, maybe this is happening.

OL - Bakker is a plug. He's get pushed back faster than Jean-Louis. The rest wasn't actually too bad though. They threw a lot of stunts at us, which would have made it really easy to run if we had McCarty and a decent run scheme. Armstrong kind of struggled again, he's better at guard. If McGrath is seriously hurt, we should consider moving Kabongo out to tackle, and have Armstrong at right guard, with hopefully Garrick back at left tackle.

DL - Baffling. Davis not starting is one thing, but can you honestly say that Clinton Wayne deserved to be in there ahead of Davis? Not a chance. Robertson was also not getting much pressure. Anoai was really good at stoppping the run. We didn't need another guy, we don't need to test a bunch of nobodies in there. Davis is a pass rusher and Anoai is a run stopper. It works well together, alot better than Wayne and Taylor. It's just retarded. Sending a message is one thing, but this is overboard. We got killed in the fourth and ultimately lost because we couldn't hold them to less than 10 yds/carry. Guillory was doing better than Robertson as well. Romero and Murphy were okay, but they were better when with Davis, Anoai, and Guillory. Bring them back. BTW, Murphy's shot on Glenn was a beauty.

LB - Augie was useless. Onatolu was flying out and making plays really well in the first half, but disappeared in the second half for two reasons....they ran away from him a lot, and o-lineman were able to get to the second level a lot more than they should have. Coe wasn't terrible, I would consider putting him in the middle if Augie gets suspended.

DB - Lenny was the best defender out there for us today. He made great tackles and had good coverage. Goss was great on the short stuff, but is ineffective at covering downfield most of the time. Buhl was terrible, I defend the guy a lot, but he was awful. Shabazz was also not very good, he tackled high way too much, he was out of position frequently, and his coverage on special teams left a lot to be desired, Younger actually played well.

ST - We lost it at the point of attack. Usually only one or two guys downfield. Shabazz missed a few times and there was no one else there. On the other side, Tristan is doing really well. Shows the ability to break it, but most of the time gets good field position.

Reffing - The Augie hit is a possible suspension, but c'mon, Ray took multiple late shots, to the head, to the legs.....nothing ever gets called on Ray, it's sickening

Coaching - very disturbing. This is starting to concern me, mostly with personnel decisions. Our d-line went to being very good to a major concern, guys like Clutts, Davis, and Anoai have been unfairly set aside. McCarty needs to be in there, Bakker shouldn't be on the team.....and our lack of a run game is absolutely destroying us.

Overall - some people are pretty concerned, I'm not overly concerned. We took a step forward this week. A solid effort, but a loss. The second half of a back to back next week at home, I expect a victory. We came out with an edge today though, and I like it. I want to see that continue into the next games. I think our secondary is going to be fine. When Robinson gets back, we'll be solid. I'd like to see Lenny stay at half and take Buhl out, but I'd also like to see Buhl go to safety and Shabazz back at linebacker. Our run defense has gotten steadily worse since he left that spot. I'd like to see Onatolu take over for Garrett, since I can't see Augie leaving the middle (unfortunately). On offense, Comiskey is back at full steam, which is good to see. Unfortunately McGrath took a step back and so did Armstrong....but Ricky is looking better, and it looks like we have pretty good depth at receiver. Maybe we should use it instead of dumping to our backs 20 times a game. Maybe instead of dumping it off we should run it.....just a thought. We're there though, we're a step away from regaining good form. We have a tough schedule to finish off with, BC twice, Sask, and Montreal. At this point, it's about improving every week. I'm not ready to clean house, we have the pieces, we've got a shot, we just need to do a couple things and we could beat any team in the league.

    Again:

    Fire everyone.

edit: To be fair... you had some good analysis. Still. Just fire everyone. 7-4 teams, winning games in Calgary on Labour Day, shouldn't be talking about "taking steps forward" a few weeks later against a craptacular Winnipeg team.... that's a loser mentality.

I'd also like to add, we didn't just give it to them tonight. We fought, we pressed them, and they won it because of a few plays. Disregard their thrashing of our run defense in the 4th, and our defense looked pretty good. Our pass defense gave up everything in the world last week, but this week they tightened it up. Our d-line didn't get much pressure because of STUPID personnel decisions, but they still played alright.

Esks are just lucky the Argos and Ti-Cats are worst. No matter what Esks do they will at least make the playoffs. I hope that is not enough to keep DM and RC.

The Esks can be a good team, but the team management, personnel decisions and game plan strategy hold them back.

The fourth quarter is when your D should SHINE from beating the ****ing hell out their opponents in the first three quarters.

Taylor got destroyed in that quarter, and our LBs can't be effective when they have to face guards and centers. I think that if they were in a position where they had to throw, then we would have had a big advantage.

Good analysis Numberz. On the end of half bomb I thought Shabazz was too slow in analyzing the play and should have been there sooner.

As for special teams Noel's punting is so bad that we didn't get the coverage we needed.

As for the Refs: I think its time we bring professional officiating to Canada.

I can see Shivone pushing Pre for his job next year. Our Safety has yet to make any significant plays.

You are not concerned and it's a step forward?

The bombers missed 3 fg and a convert.

The bombers are not that good.

We gave up another st td.

We went back to the old dink/dunk offense of past years.

If the Esks play a good team with a kicker yestrday they get spanked again by alot.

It's going to sound like I'm making excuses for DM here but I'm not. In general terms when any football coach makes highly questionable personnel decisions aren't undisclosed injuries usually the reason? Maybe Davis, McCarty and others who seemingly should be playing/playing more are more banged up than the coach is willing to let on. Just a thought.

The season is 18 games, we will see where the two teams end up record wise. Talent, man for man, I am not trading our roster for yours.

July 2006 after the Stegall play:

Understandably, Edmonton's camp wasn't nearly as colourful. "It's a coaching mistake in the fact we didn't get our guys coached up well enough to make the play," said defensive co-ordinator Rick Campbell, son of Esks' boss Hugh Campbell. "I will be more than happy to take the responsibility for that."

"We played four guys deep -- and the emphasis is on deep," said head coach Danny Maciocia. "You're not supposed to let anybody get behind you. We were crying for everybody to back up. Obviously, that didn't happen."

Yesterday after the Arjai Franklin play:

Danny Maciocia: “We knew they were going to take a shot. There were 27 seconds left on the clock – you have to understand the situation and clearly not everybody understood it.”

I honestly think that the Esks and Bombers aren't that far apart talent-wise. Both teams have similar strengths and flaws. It's just that one team's elevator is going up at the moment while the other's is going down.

Come now, you guys are 5-8, were atrocious at the beginning of the year and barely beat the Cats. If you think the bombers are in the range of Montreal or the other teams in the west you are sadly mistaken. The bombers would have gotten squashed by a good team yesterday. The Bombers are not a good team, the Eskimos right now are one of the worst teams in the league.
