New contract includes option year, locks up local product on Edmonton offensive line
The Edmonton Eskimos proved just how much they expect from their newest recruit by signing Gord Hinse to a lengthy deal -- four years and an option -- on Tuesday.
Their first selection in Saturday's Canadian Football League draft, Hinse actually put pen to paper at the Eskimos office on Monday and the deal was ratified on Tuesday.
No terms were announced, but it's expected to be in the same range that 2008 11th overall draft pick Greg Wojt attracted, averaging about $80,000 with room for incentives.
The length of the deal alone shows commitment from both sides.
"I was pretty pleased with that in it shows just how serious they are about my career," said Hinse. "It shows how committed they are to my development as a football player. It means a lot to me to be able to live and work in the city that I grew up in. I am really grateful for that." A five-year contract for a first-year player is not a usual circumstance and suggests both are in for the long haul.
"It's a unique deal," said agent Darren Gill. "A nice, long deal, which is what he wanted and what the team wanted. We're making a little bit of history here. Four and an option is a year longer than typically seen." Gill had never completed a five-year offering for a rookie or, for that matter, even seen one in his eight years of service as an agent.
"They're extremely happy, as is Gord. If he's happy and they're happy then it works for everyone," stressed Gill, who was delighted to see Hinse race up the prospective charts.
Originally considered as a late pick, Hinse progressed up the ratings in the last few months. He was chosen 11th overall with the Eskimos' first pick, while No. 6-overall rated Matt Morencie, of the University of Windsor, plummeted down the charts.
"That said a lot," said Gill.
Morencie, also an O-lineman, eventually went 21st overall, in Round 3 to the B.C. Lions.
