In defence of the older fan

I’m a little tired of the sh1t kicking that older fans take around here from some of you. I’m thinking of a couple of you. If you have to ask, then the answer is probably “yes.”

I don’t have blue hair and neither do any of my friends, but I’m in my 50s and one of those fans whom some people here dislike. I sit with friends and, yes, we (oh, the nerve!) do talk about our lives. It’s often the only time that we see each other.

We don’t make a tonne of noise but we get to our feet when it’s called for. Don’t mistake our attitude for indifference or lack of knowledge. We know this game. We grew up with it. There was no NHL team here then, so we had nothing else. I have a friend who knows this game as well as any poster here. He has friends who have been affiliated with the team, and are still connected.

I don’t really care if people here don’t like how we watch games. I love my Esks. I’ve attended games for over 40 years and have paid a lot of money for tickets over the years. I suffered through the ugly ‘60s when wins were rare. Without fans like me, this league probably would not even exist today for elitist young snobs to enjoy. We’ve paid our dues and are entitled. You should be thanking us, not criticizing us.

They should put a 50s- or 60s-something fan up on the Wall of Honour. I volunteer.

I'm in my twenties. And if I'm being honest, I don't make much noise at games. I cheer when my team gives me something to cheer about.

              Well said.

I am sick of our own fans slamming their own. Try and make a cell phone call in our building, it isn't easy.

What he said. Except for the Esky part...and the 60s part. We won a LOT in Ottawa in the 60s.

As for Elitist Snobs, I only drive Domestics, A Ford Escape at the moment to be precise. Never liked them Yoters and Elitist Japanesemobiles.

                  The Ford-Mazda?

Or do you prefer one of the other domestics? Daimler-Chrysler-Fiat? GM-Saab-Suzuki?

I don't think you guys are the target...unless you are the ones telling the gestapo to confiscate the air horns and telling people to shut up....
hey I have learnt more about the Esks history from what you old fellas (and I mean that in the most respectful way) talk about then from anything the Esks have put out.....

Don't deny it MG. There are fans at the games, who are of the older generation who this is all targeting. They remind me of Mrs.Deagle from the Gremlins movie.

But on the other hand there are Old timer fans who are not in the same boat as the other "fans". Those "blue hairs" just happen to be more pronounced then the good fan old timers. I've said numerous times I dont have issues with every oldie who walks into CW.. I'm tired of those Mrs. Deagle old fans who think because they have been around for a coon's age they have the right to tell others how to have fun or if someone else is having fun that isn't conformed to the "blue hairs" ideal , they get anal and begin to bitch.

On the flip side there are alot of the younger set fans who have absolutely zero respect for anything and that is beyond worse IMO

Re: In defence of the older fan

I think I'm more likely to watch more of the game the more worth watching the game is. But I have season tix with two of my best friends. The games are pretty much the only time I see them. So I don't feel bad talking about other things during the game.

Rest assured if the Eskies give me something to cheer about, I won't need to be told to do so.

This topic was discussed on Just a Game last night.

The Horn Nazi was mentioned a few times... Q...I think that was you that brought it up?
