    The Fire Jim Daley thread

We did this for DM, and we got our wish (eventually). Might as well start this for Daley, too.

I was willing to give him a chance up until now, but at slightly more than .5 way through the season we have the worst D in the league - and this is not Rider fan bipolarness where they shout this loudly after every loss - we literally have the worst D in the league by the numbers.

In the past, we have carouseled players in and out just to get the same result. Obviously the D playbook needs to be exorcised, shredded, then burned, and start over from scratch.

I don't know if giving Hall the DC title as well as HC is the answer. Maybe we can throw money at Chris Jones and get him to move north. Or, maybe Rich Stubler, who sucked as a HC but seemed to do well as a DC would come back. Both have a better track record than Daley, at least.....

    Discuss.

I laughed when I heard Jim Daley was becoming the Esks DC. I never liked him back from his Sask days. As a Sask fan I am fine with him staying on as Esks DC. In all fairness though I thought he would be better than Rick Campbell.

Chris Jones and Rich Stubler were mentioned. I agree they would be much better. There is probably a bunch of people out there who would be better.

I find Daley is too passive and his play calling is too conservative. It is okay to send a LB or HB blitz once in a while to change things up and confuse the offense, which can lead to a QB making mistakes. Instead he constantly sends a four man rush and unless the D line is stellar they are not going to get there all the time. IMO if the Esks put more pressure on QB's the play of the DB's would improve too as it opens up QB's to making quick decisions. From these quick decisions mistakes are more likely.

I agree that playcalling is a big part of why this team is not performing well on defence. That falls on Daley's shoulders.

Can't believe I am agreeing with a Rider fan.....I guess miracles do happen.....

Anyway, wasn't he the Riders' DC in '98 when they went 3-15? That would've explained a lot. Not sure why Hall hired him - even though he's one of "his guys," I can't recall any CFL stop where he's been a success - as a DC or HC.

The scheme is not great but we simply have lousy personel on defense as compared to the rest of the league.

I thought the D just wasn't getting enough rest in the 2nd half. In the first half they were throwing in stunts and a lot of motion and fakes, however, they couldn't sustain this play because of the 2 and outs on offence. Heck, Wolverine had to revert back to staying down for "injuries" just so the D could get a breather.

The interceptions and sacks were mainly due to confusing Burris and IMO the D is getting unfairly blamed for the loss. Copeland made some plays, and the Esks recievers didn't.

Ours is actually a "bend AND break" defence.

I expect him to be gone in the off season.

He was there for '98 I believe when the Riders were 5-13. That was the last of three years of him as head coach in Sask. 1999 is when the Riders were 3-15. Not sure where he was that year. Hall was a defensive assistant at the time, so the two have worked together before.

Little harsh, people. Was it Daley's fault that Ricky took a stupid sack that likely took them out of field goal range or that he couldn't complete a pass in the second half? Was it Daley's fault that Jim Davis ate the Esks' lunch all night long? Three picks weren't enough, should have been five? Spread the criticism around, folks.

As has been pointed out already http://www.esksfans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23837, there isn't 1 sole problem on the team, there are numerous problems.

But this thread is about Jim Daley. Let's keep it in context, ok?

Have a gander and where the Esks stand in all major defensive categories after 10 games and then try and defend Daley.

Bingo...I like the defense called by Daley through the first three quarters. Fact is that D looked like it tired in the fourth and that combined with our defensive play-calling in the fourth was our downfall.
