    Eskimos sign Khari Jones

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimo Football Club announced today the signing of free agent quarterback Khari Jones. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

Jones, the 2001 CFL Most Outstanding Player, is a prolific passer who split the 2004 season between Winnipeg and Calgary. He finished the 2004 season completing 207 passes on 367 attempts for 2,711 yards, 12 TD’s and 10 interceptions. The California – Davis product started his CFL career with BC (1997-1999), but blossomed into one of the league’s premier signal-callers following a trade to Winnipeg in February 2000.

“Over the past five years, Khari has established himself as one the CFL’s strongest quarterbacks. He’s a proven leader and a quality person who will be a great asset to the Eskimos both on and off the field,” said Eskimo head coach Danny Maciocia.

During five seasons with the Bombers (2000-2004), Jones set 18 club records and was named a 2001 CFL all-star and twice earned divisional and CFLPA all-star honours. Jones was traded to Calgary on September 24, 2004 and appeared in three games for the Stampeders. In seven active seasons, Jones has amassed more than 20,000 passing yards and thrown 144 career touchdowns.

“I am very excited to be coming to Edmonton and playing for a team that is rich in history, has an outstanding fan base and is always in the hunt for a championship. I am ready to contribute in anyway possible,” said Jones.

And yet still no mention of Wiltshire..? I don't get this at all -- if the guy who does the PR for the Esks can do up a Khari Jones release, why not a Wiltshire one???

Maybe his name isn't on the dotted line yet.

You got it Diesel... Wiltshire isn't a done deal.

the other thing to note is...
In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not released.
so any $$ figures we hear are pure speculation unless they come from Khari or his agent.

They don't have to release that info, he got the standard $250K free agent contract that Hugh has stacked on his desk.

Trying to keep an open mind I suppose Khari will be a good insurance policy should anything happen to JM, of course I hope this isn't a we signed you to BE the 2nd string quarterback so much as a we signed you to COMPETE for the second string position....Let the best man backup, Not the best contract!!!

Solid signing, looks like Khari has realized he cant be a starter in this league at this point in time and will be able to accept a backup role.
I told those f***s down at the league office a thousand times that I don't roll on Shabbos!

I'm with you on that. KJ's agent was not in much of a position to exert any leverage. My best guess is that the Esks included several bonus clauses including a larger one should JM go onto the 9 game IR.

that certainly won't stop others from jumping to the conclusion otherwise though....

It makes a ton of sense to structure things that way. Certainly after Hamilton declined interest in Khari, his agent and himself were not in any position to demand near as exohorbinant a base sum as he had in the past. Especially considering he knows up front that he is not the #1 guy going in....
