    Maas wants Long term Contract

Maas loves colours green and gold

    GERRY PRINCE, EDMONTON SUN

Jason Maas has spent his entire five-year CFL career with the Edmonton Eskimos. Naturally, the 29-year-old quarterback would like nothing more than to retire from the game wearing Green and Gold.

Maas is entering the option year of his contract with the Esks and is currently in the throes of negotiating a new deal which would further that ambition.

"We're talking about it, but it's not done," explained Maas. "Obviously, I'd like to stay in Edmonton. I have my home here and my wife has a business here now.

"I don't have any visions of going down south (to the NFL). One of my goals when I came up here was to finish my career in one place. I would definitely like a longer-term deal.

"My last one was for three (years) and an option. I'd like something similar. That would give me four more years. I'll be 33 by that point. It's up to my body whether I can put up with it."

Head coach Danny Maciocia says he's not involved with the ongoing negotiations, but clearly likes the idea of Maas inking a long-term contract.

"I want him to be here as long as I'm here," said Maciocia. "I love the guy. How can you not love Jason? He's exactly what I want in a quarterback.

"He's a competitor. He's so team-oriented. It's not all about him. He'll do whatever it takes for the team to have success.

"What else can you ask from a quarterback? He puts in the long hours. He's become a student of the game. That's exactly who you want playing quarterback."

that's well said by Ciaoch.....I agree and hope JM re-ups sooner than later....

Yeah, I don't see a Henry Burris situation here. He loves it here, hopefully the Esks want to keep him here and it'll get done.

It will make for an interesting situation next off season. If Maas resigns, that will mean the following QB/s will all be signed through next season.

        Printers
        Dickenson
        Maas
        Jones
        Greene
        Crandell
        Burris
        Kennedy
        McManus
        Allen
        Cavillo

I don't know about these guys
Glenn (I am pretty sure that he signed an extention during last season)
        Martin
        Wynn
Joseph (I think he is signed)
        Banks
        Brady
        Bishop

I believe that most QB's get signed to 2 years + an option on their first contract, which would mean that Banks and Martin are still signed through next year. This leaves a very very weak crop of free agent QB's for next year, and if Bishop does not come back to the CFL, Toronto and maybe Hamilton in particular could be in trouble.

This leaves a few teams with 2 veteran starters in great shape for next year, but could also signify a huge push for Ricky Ray.

I am surprised that no one noted this little gem in the Journal story today about the signing of 'Karate' Jones...

Sources say the Eskimos will hold a similar press conference before training camp to announce Maas has inked a long-term deal with the CFL club.

To me it was never about what I accomplished on the football field, it was about the way I played the game.

With the ease clubs can rid themselves of large contracts I'm surprised there aren't more teams signing guys long term. As long as they don't give them a guarenteed deal they can just release them at the drop of a hat with no repercussions. Things are really stacked in the teams favour.

After seeing how Jones got carted around Winnipeg and Calgary as a player I'd be a little concerned about signing long term anywhere.... but I guess if it makes the guy happy, more power to him.
Look. We can go round and round about this all the live long day. Let's keep it simple. I embody amazement. Can you dig on that? Good. Then meet me on the corner of rock and roll, and bring a flask of something that burns.

I'd be happy if JM signed long-term ...he's a good player.

However, I don't know how I'd feel about it if RR became available .

We have to stop thinking in the past about RR coming back. I doubt it will happen. Besides he hasnt played in over a year. Im not sure if he would be back to form right away. And if RR does come back it would be for a season and he would jump right back to the NFL again. It would be great to see him back but it wont happen and quite frankly Im satisfied with Maas. And also Maas would be out of here so fast if RR came back IMO.

JM should be signed long term. And for good money. He deserves it.

I doubt it will happen too, but the possibility is there. And I agree he'd need a year at #2 to get back into the swing of things again.

That's a good point, I didn't think about him bouncing back and forth...if he did want to only come back for a year or two, I'd leave it.

I know, I'm quite happy with Maas also...just thinking of possible situations.

It was also interesting to read in the 'other' paper that Maas indicated that negotiations were underway but nothing was 'done'. I think that the Eskimos will get this done closer to camp and after they have had a chance to see how his rehab has gone and he is ready to play...

On a little side note: I found it interesting to find out Maas' surgery was to repair a torn labrum. I had the same surgery in September. Now I know I'm not on a rehab regimin that would be even close to Maas, and I know as a pro athlete he is (probably ) in better shape than me to begin with, but there is no way I could throw a football at this point. Maybe a dozen times or so, but I'd pay for it the next day. Anyway. this has nothing to do with the original thread, but I'm just hoping that Maas' shoulder is ready to go by training camp.

labrum? what is that per say.....part of the rotator cuff?

I don't know the terminology so if you can't understand my explanation, too bad. The labrum is the tissue surrounding the bone of the shoulder joint. It is there basically to help hold the joint in place. In my case, the labrum seperated completely from the bone and they had to make a trench in the bone and anchor the labrum in place. It's a common injury in QB's and baseball pitchers. Basically anyone who over uses the shoulder and puts continuous stress on it. I work in construction, and my injury was due to years of using electric and cordless drills, working with my arms over my head, and heavy lifting.
